Two Adams County students win scholarships

A pair of recent high school graduates from Adams County have been named recipients of the second annual York Area Sports Night Shipley Scholarship Award.

Gettysburg High School graduate Adam Yingling and Littlestown High School graduate Kaitlin Yealy have both been awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Shipley Scholarship Award Committee. Yingling will be playing soccer at Ohio Wesleyan University this fall while Yealy will be playing softball at Sheppard University.

Yingling was named GameTimePA.com YAIAA Boys' Soccer Player of the Year this past season and was a GameTimePA.com YAIAA first-team tennis player. Yealy was named a GameTimePA.com YAIAA first-team softball all-star the past two seasons.

According to Shipley Scholarship Award committee member Charlie Jacobs, Yingling and Yealy were picked because of their dedication to both academics and athletics. He added that the pair was chosen from a group of six applicants.

"We looked at their GPAs, their ambitions and what they want to accomplish in life," Jacobs said. "We liked what (Yingling and Yealy) wrote and how they expressed themselves. Athletically they were very successful and they were good students, which is what we look for. They both reflected that."

Funds for the scholarships are raised each year from York Area Sports Night photo sales, ticket sales and donations. Jacobs said that students interested in next year's scholarship will be able to apply online at www.yorksportsnight.com.
