What to know: YAIAA lacrosse championships

After a thrilling Tuesday night of lacrosse action, the top two seeds in both the boys' and girls' brackets will meet in Thursday's title games.

Two relative newcomers to the league championship scene — York Catholic and Red Lion — will meet in the boys' championship at 7 p.m. while the only two teams to ever win a YAIAA girls' lacrosse title — Kennard-Dale and York Catholic — will square off at 5:30 p.m. Both championship games will be hosted at Central York.

Neither Red Lion or York Catholic have ever won a YAIAA boys' lacrosse title. The Lions beat the Fighting Irish, 17-15, in mid-April, but York Catholic has gotten hot, winning five of six since that setback, including Tuesday's 14-8 win over No. 3 Central York. The Irish will have to do a better job of slowing down Sam Emig and Jac Gemmill, who combined for 12 goals and seven assists for Red Lion in the first matchup. York Catholic relies more on a balanced attack, evidenced by their five players who tallied at least 30 goals this season.

The girls' title game pits the league's perennial powerhouses in a rematch of one of the best lacrosse games in York all season. York Catholic pulled off a 9-8 overtime win at Kennard-Dale in late April, marking the first time the Rams had lost a regular season game to a league opponent since 2011. The teams are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the district in both goals scored and goals against average.

Can York Catholic sweep championship day or can Red Lion and Kennard-Dale spoil the Irish party?
