William Penn plans to reinstate nine sports

In a speech and outline presented to the York City school board on Thursday, new athletic director Ron Coursey outlined a plan to turn the downtrodden athletic department around.

In that outline was a goal to reinstate nine sports programs cut in recent years.

The plan, according to Coursey, is to reinstate baseball and competitive cheer in 2016-2017, then soccer (boys and girls), softball, wrestling and tennis (boys and girls) in 2017-2018, followed by cross country in 2018-2019.

"We have to be strategic about how we do this," Coursey said. "Because what we don't want to do is have a knee jerk reaction and reinstate a sport, then it's gone again in five years. What we want to do is build it so it's sustainable and can be successful."

Coursey went on to outline a new eligibility standard at William Penn that would require student-athletes to maintain a 2.5 grade point average to be eligible to play sports. He also presented a plan to help students take college tours, instill a student handbook that student-athletes would have to follow and add a mandatory study hall to their schedules.
