Ken Shafer retires as New Oxford AD

Shafer held the position at New Oxford for 17 years

New Oxford High School is looking for a new athletic director.

Longtime Colonials athletic director Ken Shafer officially retired last Monday after holding the position for 17 years. He also served as the school's softball coach for 15 seasons and was an assistant football coach for five.

"Well it's something I've been thinking about for a couple of years," Shafer said. "It was a good time to do it now, in between seasons. Add in some personal reasons, and it was just the right time."

Former longtime New Oxford football coach and assistant principal Gardy Lawrence will be the interim athletic director until a full-time replacement is found. Shafer said he is aware the position is being advertised but he doesn't have an idea of how long it will take to find a replacement.

"I had a very enjoyable tenure and worked with a lot of great people and coaches," Shafer said. "The tough thing about it is saying goodbye to so many friends."
