Greg Wagner will soon take over as the Spring Grove Area School District's new athletic director.
Wagner, the athletic and facilities director at the Susquenita School District, was approved by Spring Grove's school board at Monday's meeting. He will start in February after completing his duties at Susquenita, said Spring Grove Supt. Robert Lombardo.
“What really stood out to us is that he has a wealth of experience," Lombardo said of Wagner. "His work at Susquenita and everywhere else he’s been appeared to be outstanding. We were looking for someone who needed a minimal amount of training and could get started right away.”
Wagner has been at Susquenita since 2010, and was previously the athletic director at the Hanover Public School District. He graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management and received a Master of Science degree in sport administration from Robert Morris University in 2005, according to his bio on the Susquenita School District website. He said Spring Grove's athletic and academic programs are what attracted him to the position.
“I pride myself in being a strong supporter of academics as a whole, not just for athletes, but in general," Wagner said. "Spring Grove’s reputation precedes itself; I’ve known about its reputation since my time at Hanover. It’s a great district, the facilities are top-notch. There are so many good things about the district, I could go on and on.”
Wagner's last day at Susquenita will be Feb. 12 and he anticipates starting at Spring Grove as early as Feb. 15, he said.
Spring Grove's current athletic director, Scott Govern, is leaving the school district to take the same position at Derry Township School District, which includes Hershey High School.
For the two months between Govern's departure and Wagner's arrival, the athletic department will be managed by a combination of high school Principal Dr. Rosemary Cugliari and other administrators, Lombardo said.
"We'll take a team approach," he said.
