Palmyra's Leo Higgins reaches Dist. 3 semifinals

Leo Higgins of Palmyra will carry Lebanon County's banner into the District 3 Class 3A wrestling tournament on Friday.

Higgins, a senior, won a pair of bouts Thursday evening at Giant Center to advance to Friday evening's semifinal round at 182 pounds. The other three county 3A wrestlers were eliminated Thursday.

In the preliminary round, Higgins took out Nolan Buck of Exeter Township, 6-2, then edged Tyler Moyer of Central Dauphin, 5-4 in the quarterfinals.

Higgins trailed 2-0 after one period against Moyer, and was still behind, 3-2, after two. But he escaped in the third period to tie the bout, then secured a takedown with 0:23 remaining. A Moyer escape with 10 seconds left made the final score 5-4.

In the semifinals, Higgins, now 24-3, will take on Ben Maack of Governor Mifflin (37-1). The session begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Giant Center.

Palmyra had two other qualifiers for districts and both went 0-2. Matt Carroll (113) fell victim to a pair of pins, while Josh Myers (126) lost by pin and then by a 7-4 decision.

Cedar Crest 285-pounder Ross Fisher was beaten 16-1 by a defending district champion, Cameron Tinner of Shippensburg, then was nipped 5-3 in the consolation round.

The District 3 Class 2A tournament begins Saturday morning at 10, then both classes return at 5:30 for the semifinal rounds and consolations.
