SWIMMING: Palmyra girls 3rd at Mid-Penn meet

The Palmyra girls swim team had another fantastic regular season, winning its fifth straight Mid-Penn Keystone Division title.

And now, the Cougars are off to a pretty good start in the postseason.

Sparked by a trio of fourth-place individual finishes on Saturday, Palmyra wrapped up the two-day Mid-Penn Conference Championships at Cumberland Valley with a strong third-place showing out of 23 teams.

Outperformed by only perennial powerhouse Hershey (601.5) and State College (342), the Cougars racked up 226 team points with the help of Samantha  St. Clair, Ellie Keck and the 400 freestyle relay team of St. Claire, Shealyn Trostle, Karly Bruce and Keck.

St. Claire, who took fifth in the 200 freestyle on Friday, swam to a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:17.99, while Keck took the same place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.99.

The 400 free relay quartet was fourth in 3:41.15.

On the boys' side, Palmyra took 11th with 69 team points, trailing, among other team champ State College and its 412 points.

The Cougars' 400 free relay unit of Joshua Wakefield, Ryan James, Tanner Yaw, and Teag Culver led the way on Saturday with a fifth-place finish in 3:23.19.

Omission: An article on the Lancaster-Lebanon League Girls' Swimming Championships that appeared in Saturday's print edition inadvertently failed to include the third-place finish of the Cedar Crest girls 400 free relay team of Krysta Weik, Caitlyn Gelgot, Jaclyn Bord and Brianna Shay. The relay quartet posted a time of 3:49.59 to help the Falcons finish fifth as a team.
