Palmyra snaps losing skid, wallops West Perry

The losing streak is over. Just in time for the Palmyra football team to work on another winning streak.

The Cougars halted a three-game losing skid on Friday night, and in the process likely locked up a district playoff bid, with a 42-23 victory over West Perry on Senior Night at Buck Swank Stadium.

Now 7-3, Palmyra, 12th in the latest AAA district power rankings, rolled out to a 21-3 halftime lead that grew to 28-3 after three quarters before West Perry made the final score semi-respectable with a 20-point fourth quarter.

Junior running back Alon Rhette led the way, rushing for 141 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns as the Cougars piled up 308 total yards.

Ethan Harro added a pair of touchdown catches from Tyler Gallagher, and Shane Gregris contributed a special teams score by recovering from a blocked punt in the end zone in the second quarter.

In Myerstown, the Raiders stubbed their toe in their regular season finale despite a two-touchdown night from Tyler Horst.

Winners of five of its last six coming in on the heels of an 0-3 start, Elco surrendered 268 yards on the ground to the Berks County reps and 471 total yards in all on the way to the season-ending defeat.

Horst was a bright spot, toting the rock 19 times for 97 yards and a pair of scores, while the county's all-time passing yardage leader, senior quarterback Jeff Martin, completed 8 of 17 passes for 114 yards in the final game of his distinguished career.

Five of Martin's completions went to Andrew Olson, who totaled 86 yards on those receptions.
