Boys' soccer: Lancaster Mennonite advances with Chase Ross 2OT goal
LANCASTER- After a hundred minutes of game time, a single strike from the left leg of Lancaster Mennonite senior midfielder Chase Ross in double overtime made every second worth it in double overtime.
From roughly thirty yards out, Ross drove the ball past Wyomissing goalkeeper Matt Benusa that pushed the Blazers into the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class AA playoffs with a 3-2 victory.
"It was definitely instinct. I was very tired and I had the space and I thought that I just had to let one go and luckily, it went in," Ross said.
The Blazers held a 2-1 lead with just under twenty minutes remaining but a foul inside the box awarded Wyomissing a penalty kick which freshman Dominic Flowers converted to knot the score at 2-2.
"We were disappointed but we had a fiery spirit and we just wanted to go out there and do our best and win," Ross said.
After the first 15-minute overtime period ceased to declare a winner, just over five minutes in double overtime was needed before Ross drove home the golden goal.
"It was a wonderful strike. It's just a great way for him and for the seniors to finish up their last game on their home field," Blazers coach Fred Winey said. "That was a great moment for them and the team. Those are the kind of moments that stick in your mind as you graduate or as you look back at your playing career. He'll be telling his grandkids about that one."
No. 3 Lancaster Mennonite will now face no. 11 Hamburg in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Hersheypark Stadium at 5:30.
Hamburg upset no. 6 Boiling Springs, 1-0 on Monday.
"I think it was definitely a wakeup call for us," Ross said. "We were confident going into this game and I think we need to focus a little bit better next game and hopefully we'll play better."
