FOOTBALL: Hamburg runs over Elco, 30-8

HAMBURG >> When Elco entered its first matchup of 2015 against a non-conference opponent who only won one game last year, it did not expect an upset.

But the Hamburg Hawks and their star running back Ignacio Reynoso trounced the Raiders 30-8, Friday, to begin the season.

Reynoso, who ran for 117 total yards, recorded the Hawks' first touchdown of the season on a 36-yard rush with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter. A successful extra point attempt by Aaron Nelson gave the Hawks a 7-0 lead over the Raiders.

The next offensive drive by Hamburg had Reynoso out front again, with quarterback Nicholas Kuhn completing a 55-yard pass to the sophomore, who broke three Elco tackles on the way toward the goal line, but fumbled on the 5-yard line. The fumble was recovered by Elco's Ryan Rolon, but the Raiders' offense moved just a few yards before turning the ball over on downs.

Reynoso tallied his second touchdown of the game just minutes later with a 1-yard rush into the end zone, but the extra point attempt was blocked by Elco.

Reynoso went on to score all four of Hamburg's touchdowns.

Elco quarterback Jeffrey Martin, a four-year starter, completed just 13 of 24 pass attempts for 91 yards in the loss. Most of his incompletions were intended for senior Andrew Olson, a recent transfer to the school.

The Raiders did not put points on the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter, when junior running back Tyler Horst ran for a four-yard touchdown. Punter Kyle Knight faked an extra point attempt and passed it to Horst in the end zone for a successful two-point conversion, to make the score 30-8 with less than two minutes remaining.

With Elco's loss of All-State receiver Dustin Miller to graduation, Horst became Martin's go-to player, with 14 carries for 64 yards.

The Raiders take on Palmyra on the road next Friday at 7 p.m.
