SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Palmyra hammers Middletown


The Palmyra softball team exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first on the way to a 12-5 Mid-Penn Keystone Division win over Middletown on Friday at Palmyra Area High School.

Now 3-2 overall and in the Keystone, the Cougars banged out 13 hits in the win, four of which came off the bat of Kailey Werkheiser, who also drove in four runs to lead the rout.

Kayla Bonwaitz added a three hits, including a double, and drove in a pair, and Hannah Phillippy and Payge Coburn chipped in with two apiece in support of winning pitcher Cat Wicker, who struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

ELCO 10, LANCASTER CATHOLIC 0 (5 INNINGS) >> In Myerstown, the Raiders made short work of Catholic with the help of Claire Shaak's five-inning one-hit shutout.

Shaak also collected two hits as Elco improved to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in Section Three.

Vern Reinhart led the offense with three hits and Maddie Drescher smacked a double for Elco's lone extra-base hit.

LAMPETER-STRASBURG 13, ANNVILLE-CLEONA 3 >> In Lampeter, A-C went down in six innings en route to its first loss of the season.

Now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in Section Four, A-C took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but it was all L-S from there.

Hannah Fischer was a bright spot for Annville-Cleona with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs.

Also on Friday, Lebanon fell to Warwick 15-0 in four innings, and Lebanon Catholic endured a 23-0 three-inning beatdown from Donegal.
