Elco rolls past CV in opener, 50-34

The Elco girls basketball team started its season a little later than the rest of Lebanon County did. But the wait was certainly well worth it.

The Raiders opened their 2015-16 season in impressive fashion on Wednesday night, rolling over Conestoga Valley 50-34 in a non-league contest in Witmer.

En route to the convincing victory Elco bolted to a 20-6 first-quarter lead and placed four players in double figures.

Alexis Thomas fronted the Elco attack with 15 points and Taylor Bossert, Chandelle Keller and Ryelle Shuey dropped in 11 points apiece for Ashli Shay's squad. The Raiders also helped their cause with 15-for-21 free throw shooting.

Also on Wednesday night:

Lebanon Catholic 55, Harrisburg Academy 35: On Assumption Hill, the Beavers improved to 2-0 in the early going behind a tone-setting 23-1 dash through the first quarter.

Allison Warren paced Catholic with 13 points and Celine Mars tossed in 10 on a night that saw the Beavers get points from eight different players.

Hempfield 41, Palmyra 32: In Landisville, the re-tooling Cougars dropped their second straight, falling in a 12-4 first-quarter hole and never completely escaping it.

Now 1-2, Palmyra did get back in the thick of things with a 17-point second quarter, but couldn't quite close the deal.

Molly Gundermann led the Cougars with 9 points.
