Fight in stands halts girls' basketball game

The Lebanon Catholic girls' basketball team's season-opening contest against Steel-High on Saturday was halted in the third quarter after a fight broke out in the stands.

According to Lebanon City Police, 38-year-old Kelly Spearwood, of Steelton, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a school official. He is currently in Lebanon county Central Book awaiting arraignment.

The Beavers were leading 45-40 with 2:22 left in the third when the fracas erupted. According to a witness, a fan became unruly in the stands and was asked to calm down by Lebanon Catholic athletic director Mike Miller. Miller, 63, said that he addressed a group of disorderly fans from Steelton, asking one of the fans to leave. Spearwood then struck Miller in the chest, knocking him to the ground, causing him to strike his head on the wooden floor, police said.

A source close to Miller confirmed the account by the witness but did not wish to be identified.

Lebanon City police were called to the scene at 3:40 p.m. on Saturday to investigate the incident, and Miller was taken to the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital's emergency room for treatment. He was not believed to be seriously hurt.
