FREDERICKSBURG - Northern Lebanon football coach Roy Wall has been in Anthony Sottasante’s position before, with a limited number of healthy football players just trying to make it to the end of the season.

So when word came that a depleted Columbia squad would have enough players to make the trip to Fredericksburg on Friday night for Homecoming, the Vikings were pretty happy.

“I’m glad they came and were able to play the game. Our season didn’t go exactly as we had planned, but we’re playing for .500,” Wall said. “Our seniors had two home games. Our kids, they deserve these games.”

Needing two wins for a .500 season, the Vikings wasted little time, scoring touchdowns on their five first-half possessions en route to a 42-0 victory to improve to 4-5 (3-2 Section 3).

Luke Funck set the tone defensively on the game’s opening play, sacking Columbia’s Maleik Crenshaw. Just three plays later, the Tide punted the ball and the Viking offense took control from there.

Northern Lebanon’s Stevie Herb scored both touchdowns for the VIkings in the first quarter with runs of 10 and 11 yards.

Meanwhile, the Viking defense got huge plays from Michigan Daub and Isiah Davila to force the Tide into two more punts before the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Daub ran for a pair of touchdowns and completed a 57-yard pass to Caleb Fischer.

Fischer, who ended the night with three receptions for 89 yards, said, "It’s a tribute to teamwork. We practice every day hard, we always go hard. We always work together, so it’s coming out pretty well.”

Perhaps nobody epitomizes teamwork more for the Vikings than fullback Noah Smith, who, according to Wall, has blocked for three 1,000-yard rushers in the past three years at Northern Lebanon.

Smith tacked on the Vikings’ final touchdown of the evening with a 4-yard run and ended the night with eight carries for 69 yards.

“I have no problem blocking all day," Smith said. "As long as we keep going and we have spirit, I’ll block all day for everybody. It does not matter to me,” Smith said, continuing, “It’s nice to see a fire again. We needed that.”

Northern Lebanon hosts Lancaster Catholic next Friday night.
