ELIZABETHTOWN – Manheim Central took control of field position and with it the game on Friday night in a 33-10 win over host Elizabethtown in Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 football.

The Barons (5-1, 2-1), now in a second-place tie in the section, held a 13-10 lead at intermission, then outscored the Bears (4-1, 1-2) 13-0 in the third period by outgaining them 107-22 in that 12-minute stretch.

Both of Manheim Central's scores in the third period came quickly, on possessions started at the 50-yard line or better. On the Barons' first possession of the half, after two inconsequential runs, quarterback Kody Kegarise connected down the middle with Jake Novak for a 34-yard touchdown and a 19-10 lead with 6:19 left in the third.

Manheim Central punted on its next possession, but on the next series scored on its first snap. On a play action, Kegarise found a wide-open Gunnar Royer for a 50-yard touchdown and a 26-10 advantage with :41 remaining in the third.

Meanwhile, Elizabethtown did not get past the 50-yard line in the second half until Manheim Central already had its 33-10 lead. The Bears started three of their first four second-half possessions inside their own 20, and were held to just 35 yards rushing for the game.

“We made some defensive adjustments at halftime,” Manheim Central head coach Dave Hahn said. “The assistant coaches did a good job talking to the kids, making sure they knew their assignments.”

Tough Kegarise threw for three touchdowns in the second half, the last of which was a fourth-quarter 12-yard toss to Colin Erb, he did most of his first half damage with his legs. He opened the game with an 80-yard touchdown run to put the visitors up 7-0 just 11 seconds into the game.

“Coach Hahn said, 'there you go, that got you started',” Kegarise said of that opening play.

Get him started it did. Kegarise's next two carries were for 24 and 23 yards, and he would finish with 201 yards rushing on 18 attempts. Passing, he was 9-for-14 for 156 yards and no interceptions.

Elizabethtown took advantage of a Manheim Central fumble to score its lone touchdown, a 39-yard screen pass to the right from Micah Garber to Cayden Livingston, tying the game 7-7 with 5:08 left in the first.

The Barons retook the lead with a 12-play drive in the second quarter. It included a 4th-and-2 that Kegarise converted with a 2-yard run, and a 3rd-and-10 on which Kegarise connected with Jake Novak for 11 yards. Kegarise finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 13-7 lead with 1:19 left in the half.

Elizabethtown responded with a 37-yard field goal by David Shank with three seconds left before halftime, but no momentum from that late score carried into the second half.

“I told the guys that if they were satisfied with that first half, they were crazy,” Kegarise said.

Novak caught seven passes for 80 yards.

Garber was 10-for-18 for 171 yards. Logan Yohn caught three of those passes for 60 yards.
