N. Lebanon not able to stop York Suburban in 48-31 loss
FREDERICKSBURG – A team rarely loses when it scores on every opportunity.
York Suburban scored touchdowns on each of its first seven possessions to defeat Northern Lebanon 48-31 in non-league football on Friday night.
The Trojans (3-2) had three rushing touchdowns from Teague Hoffman and three touchdown passes from Ben Igo. York Suburban failed to reach the end zone on only one fourth quarter possession.
“The difference was that we didn't make plays defensively,” Northern Lebanon coach Roy Wall said. “We didn't get stops. We didn't get turnovers. We got in a shootout with them and couldn't get off of the field.”
The most devastating drive of the game was probably York Suburban's first scoring drive of the third quarter. It came just after the Vikings (2-3) got back in the game with a 49-yard touchdown run by Stevie Herb to make the score 27-19 following a failed two-point attempt. Herb's touchdown run was in doubt due to a flag for a forward pitch beyond the line of scrimmage by Northern Lebanon quarterback Michigan Daub, but officials ruled the pitch was a legal lateral.
However, York Suburban responded with a 10-play, 65-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Igo to Janner Torres for a 34-19 lead with 5:55 left in the third quarter. Torres also converted two third downs on the drive, with an 18-yard run on a 3rd-and-4 and a 6-yard run on 3rd-and-5.
After that touchdown, Northern Lebanon trailed by multiple scores the rest of the way.
Along with being unable to stop the Trojans defensively, the Vikings were hurt by a 1-for-5 showing in conversions after touchdowns. They were 1-for-3 kicking and 0-for-2 on two-point attempts.
“Last year we went for two all the time,” Wall said. “Now we mix and match based on the situation.”
Christian Trader led Northern Lebanon with four catches for 118 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown that pulled the Vikings within 41-31 with 11:04 left in the fourth quarter.
Daub was 10-for-21 for 216 yards and the one touchdown to Trader. He did not throw an interception. Herb rushed for 85 yards on 13 carries, also scoring on an 11-yard run in the first quarter.
Wall said that the Vikings would try to put this loss behind them quickly and focus on defending their Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 title. All of NL's remaining schedule is section opponents, starting at home next Friday with Donegal.
