Trinity trounces Annville-Cleona in opener

ANNVILLE - Fourteen seconds after ball met foot and the season had at last arrived - the long-awaited, precious football season - Trinity managed to spoil Annville-Cleona's 2016 debut.

For back went that ball in Shamrock hands, 86 yards the other way for a kickoff return touchdown.

And it didn't get much better from there.

The Little Dutchmen dropped their season opener, 55-27, in a game that was rarely ever in question. Trinity received six touchdowns from quarterback Andrew Boguski, including five through the air. Trinity feasted on five Annville-Cleona turnovers, 110 penalty yards and a myriad of busted coverages.

The next move for Little Dutchmen coach Matt Gingrich seemed clear: fix those big mistakes

"That's where we will start," Gingrich said. "I thought we did a pretty good job moving the ball and on defense in certain spots, but it seems there's a lot of similarities to last year where on third-and-long we can't step up. And fourth-and-long we can't cover the correct people."

Following Alex Schlager's game-cracking kickoff return, Shamrocks cornerback Ty Knopp picked off Annville-Cleona signal caller Noah Myers (2-15, 11 yards, 3 INTs) to set up Boguski's first passing score. A blocked punt and another pick then stunted the ensuing Little Dutchmen drives, allowing the Shamrocks to carry a 21-0 lead into the second quarter.

"You've got to give them all the credit in the world," Gingrich said. "They looked good and they played well."

Before the half, the Little Dutchmen mustered a steady touchdown drive capped by Jacob Turner's 1-yard rush to close within a couple scores. Yet that was the nearest they would come, as a 28-8 halftime deficit nearly doubled in the third.

Boguski hit Tresjon Ruiz on a 40-yard catch-and-run after running in a score and later found Ruiz again for six to open the fourth.

"We scored like five touchdowns in one quarter in our last scrimmage, so I've been itching to do this," said Boguski, who would've attended Cedar Crest had it not been for a family move in seventh grade. "We did really well; I'm really happy. We don't usually play like this. This was a lot different, a lot of fun."

Annville-Cleona answered with a couple garbage-time touchdowns. First came Cameron Hoch breaking free, shedding tacklers and diving in to cap a 45-yard effort. Then Turner picked up his second score on a 40-yard scoring scamper.

The Little Dutchmen will look to regroup in a home test against Biglerville next week.
