Singer, Annville-Cleona rout Lebanon, 9-0

Michaela Singer became A-C's career goals leader with 31 in a 9-0 defeat of Lebanon on Wednesday afternoon.

ANNVILLE - A little rain fell into the lives of the Annville-Cleona field hockey team on Wednesday afternoon. Literally, as its Section 3 home matchup with Lebanon was played, at times, in a steady rain.

Figuratively, though, the sun continued to shine on A-C as it notched another victory in a season filled with them by routing Lebanon 9-0 behind a hat trick from Emily Fiebig.

Now 11-1 overall and 7-1 in Section Three heading into a Friday showdown with first place Lancaster Catholic, A-C also celebrated an individual milestone on Wednesday, when senior forward Michaela Singer became the program's leader in career goals with 31 after scoring in the first half to help her team to a 6-0 halftime lead.

What comes up Friday and beyond remains to be seen, but right now life is good for head coach Sue Felty's squad.

"I always speak cautiously, because I never want to look ahead," Felty said after a brief postgame celebration honoring Singer's accomplishment. "But things have been falling into place for us so far. I'm definitely concerned about Friday because that's the only team we lost to, it all depends how we perform. But we had probably the best game of our season last week against Elco (a 6-0 win), so it's like, 'Can we continue to do that?'" The girls have really stepped up, and that's what we need to do."

A-C wasted no time taking care of business on Wednesday, jumping on top 4:55 into the game on the first of Katelyn Brightbill's two goals, then moving ahead 2-0 on Singer's record-breaking score with 16:06 left in the half.

The home team was off and running from there, getting a hat trick from Fiebig before intermission as well as a Morgan Zimmerman goal to go up 6-0 at the half.

"We're working really well together lately," said Singer, who notched her 17th goal of the season on Wednesday. "We've been communicating better, and growing as a team really helps on the field. We're like a family, and it helps with how we communicate and how we play."

A-C's cohesiveness was on full display on and off the soggy field, as it added second half scores from Brightbill, Faith Victa and Brightbill - it could have been more if not for 23 saves from Lebanon goalie Maddie Gates - before celebrating Singer's milestone afterwards.

"She's really kinda taken off this year," Felty said of Singer. "She didn't have a lot of goals previously, but  she has a lot this year, which has been nice. It caught me by surprise, but she kinda reminded about it. It's really pretty cool."

Singer, of course, wasn't about to argue.

"It's pretty awesome. I'm kinda speechless," Singer said with a smile. "I saw that I was close, so I knew I wanted to go after it. It's really exciting. And I know it doesn't just help me, it helps the whole team. It's not just for me, it's for everybody."
