Crest's Gryboski strikes gold at L-L swimming

Cedar Crest freshman Eli Gryboski was in the 'slow' heat for the 100 breast stroke at Friday night's Lancaster-Lebanon League Boys Swimming Championships.

In other words, Gryboski wasn't one of the top eight seeds and as a result was not expected to medal.

So, of course, he went out and won the whole thing, stunning the field and a lot of other people to win the breast stroke league title in a season-best time of 1:01.54.

Gryboski's thrilling win helped Cedar Crest to a fifth place finish in the team standings with 47 points.

Matthew Moffitt also had a big night for the Falcons, placing fourth in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke while also helping Cedar Crest win medals in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Also grabbing individual medals for the Falcons were Gabe Deiderick (6th,100 freestyle) Josh Wildonger (7th, 100 butterfly) and Elliott Knapp (8th, breast stroke).

Moffitt, Wildonger, Knapp, and Deiderick made up the fifth place 200 medley relay quartet, while Moffitt, Deiderick, Knapp and Jaxon Kelly teamed up to place fifth in the 400 freestyle relay. The Falcons made it a medal sweep of the relays with a sixth in the 200 free relay courtesy of Kelly, Wildonger, Cameron Hain and Ryan Knapp.

Hempfield won the team title with 115.5 points.

Mid-Penn Championships

Ellie Keck grabbed a silver medal in the 100 butterfly and swam the first leg on the runner-up 200 freestyle relay team to lead the Palmyra girls swim team to a strong performance on day one of the Mid-Penn Conference Swimming Championships Friday at Cumberland Valley.

Keck, a junior, clocked a time of 58.28 seconds en route to finishing second in the butterfly, then later teamed with Shealyn Trostle, Maddie Wolfe and Samantha St. Clair to give the Cougars the silver in the 200 free relay in 1:39.05.

Wolfe and St. Clair also shined individually Friday, with Wolfe taking fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.19 seconds and St. Clair also finishing fourth, in the 200 freestyle, in 1:56.27. Those efforts helped Palmyra into fourth place in the team standings.

On the boys' side, Palmyra came away with two medals on the first day of competition - an eighth place from Ryan James in the butterfly and a fifth from the 200 free relay of James, Stephen Lyons, Joe Bushta and Nick Mosby. The Cougar boys are currently sixth in the team standings.

The Mid-Penn meet resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m., back at Cumberland Valley.
