Lebanon County H.S. Highlights: March 29th

Game of the night

Annville-Cleona baseball 3, Pine Grove 1

Think you've seen it all on the diamond? Think again.

Making their 2016 debut, the Little Dutchmen completed a no-hitter despite committing 10 errors at Pine Grove. Mitch Long pitched 6 2/3 innings, ceding the mound and final out to Tyler Schrader, who also earned an RBI at the plate. Long's two hits were tops for Annville-Cleona, and his battery mate, senior Hunter Long, recorded the team's lone other RBI.

Akin to many area games Tuesday, wind played a monumental factor in field and helped facilitate the Little Dutchmen's sloppy defense.

"It made it difficult on both the outfielders and infielders," Annville-Cleona coach Scott Shyda said. "And nobody hit anything deep to left field."

Mitch Long would have been able to complete the no-hitter by himself had it not been for a rising pitch count and uncertainty for when the next defensive miscue would strike behind him. In fact, amid all the errors, Shyda confessed he didn't even know a no-hitter was at stake. Every run scored between the teams was unearned.

Annville-Cleona's road triumph was its first over the Cardinals since 2005. The Little Dutchmen next host reigning state champion Lancaster County Christian.

Player of the night

Mitch Long, Annville-Cleona junior

Long tossed all but one out of a no-hitter and led the Little Dutchmen with two hits at the plate.

"What an absolute gem of a pitching performance," Shyda said. "Even when he missed, he missed very close. He didn't need much other than his fastball. He kept some of their hitters in the middle of the lineup more off balance, but we really went with the fastball primarily. He's a tough kid."

Boys Lacrosse

Cumberland Valley 7, Palmyra 6

In the first game of the Dave Ondrusek era, the Cougars ran out of time at home in their upset bid of a 2015 state semifinalist. Palmyra fell behind 3-0 in the opening quarter and then outscored the Eagles in each of the third and fourth.

"The boys didn't quit. They had a lot of desire and were a little tight at the beginning," Ondrusek said. "The last three quarters we actually started executing the offenses we had put in ...  it was truly a team effort. The defense played very well."

Jared Richard, Kyle Nolen and Josh Shoemaker each netted two goals for the Cougars. Palmyra junior Ethan Gain tallied a game-high three assists.

Girls Lacrosse
