Shippensburg rolls to 46-17 wrestling win vs. Waynesboro

The only chance Waynesboro had against Shippensburg on Thursday night was to get off to a good start in the lighter weights and hope to survive the Greyhounds' strength at the top of its lineup.

The Indians took care of the first part of that equation, but not the second.

The result was a 46-17 victory for Ship in a Mid Penn Colonial Division wrestling match at Waynesboro. The win keeps the Hounds in contention for the division title and improves their chances to qualify for a District 3 team tournament berth.

"Once we got to 132 pounds, I thought we'd get a pretty good run going," Shippensburg coach Tony Yaniello said. "And we were able to get all of them except for 145."

Waynesboro (5-5, 2-3 MPC) got the benefit of a start at 113 and took advantage by winning the first three bouts and taking a 12-0 lead. Bryan Layman scored a pin, Matt McCann avenged an earlier loss to Dylan Ramsey with a 6-4 decision and Laken Rouzer won 5-0 at 126.

Ramsey had beaten McCann 8-1 at the Carlisle tournament, but McCann turned it around this time, helped by three caution points against Ramsey, plus a reversal that broke a 4-4 tie.

Indian coach Dan Craig said, "We got off to a pretty strong start. Layman looked good and McCann won a nice revenge match."

But once Shippensburg (4-1, 4-1 MPC) got to Chandler Olson at 132, things turned around quickly. Olson scored a pin in 23 seconds, then Ian Reed handed Adam Wertz a 10-1 major.

"I thought 138 would be a swing match and Reed dominated it," Yaniello said.

Dalton Mowen scored the final points for 'Boro with a 21-5 technical fall at 145, but the Hounds closed it out with pins by Sterling Shetter (160), Levi Shoemaker (170), Cameron Tinner (285) and Jeffery Russell (106), and decisions by Eddie Ocker (152), Colton Musser (182), Cole Forrester (195) and Collin Dolbin (220).

Forrester had another tight match against the Indians' Seth Egolf. He had beaten Egolf 3-1 in overtime last year and again at Carlisle this year, and Thursday it was more of the same, a 3-1 decision. The deciding points came via a second-period takedown instead of overtime this time.

Craig said, "They've had three matches and they were all 1-1 and decided by a takedown."

Shippensburg can claim a piece of the Colonial Division title if it wins its remaining league meet - as expected - against West Perry, and if Boiling Springs can knock off Big Spring on Jan. 19.
