WRESTLING: Thursday, Chambersburg wins 9th straight

CHAMBERSBURG - Chambersburg closed out its dual meet season Thursday evening with its ninth consecutive victory.

The Trojans walloped Harrisburg 65-9 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match at CASHS Field House.

Now the team will await the final District 3 Class AAA rankings to see if they fall inside the top 16 teams and qualify for the district team tournament. The final day for results is Saturday and officials pairings will be released Sunday. The first round is set for Tuesday.

“Now we’ll have to see what happens,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “By the time we posted out score, we had jumped about four places to No. 14, but all the results from tonight weren’t in yet.”

The Trojans finished with six pins, including Phillipe Lozius (285), Seth Runshaw (106), Spencer Runshaw (120), Garrett Kyner (138), Dalton Grace (195) and Saul Chacon (220).

“For the kids, the highlight was Saul getting his first win,” Mentzer said. “He had never wrestled before, but he stuck with it. He did some really nice things in that match, especially on his feet. The kids were excited to see that.

“Phillipe is also starting to figure it out at heavyweight - he was pretty dominant tonight.”

Also for Chambersburg (9-3, 4-3 MPC), which opened the season 0-3, Colin Runshaw (152) had a technical fall and four wins came via forfeit.

Mentzer said, “Matty Strunk had been wrestling at 145, but Drake Brenize was out of the lineup tonight and Matty was the only one eligible to wrestle at 145. So he lost a few pounds and wrestled pretty well (in an 8-3 loss) against a pretty tough kid.”

If the Trojans do not qualify for districts, their next action is Feb. 20 in the Section I Tournament at Mechanicsburg.
