WRESTLING: Chambersburg places 2 at Escape the Rock

SOUTHAMPTON - Seven of the 12 wrestlers representing Chambersburg at the Escape the Rock Tournament at Council Rock South on Saturday and Sunday won at least two bouts.

Garrett Kyner (138 pounds) and Drew Peck (182) each went 5-2 for the tourney and placed fifth.

"It was a really strong tournament," Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. "There were two kids in the event who have won world championship medals. There were a lot of good teams, plus some teams who only brought really good kids."

Kyner won twice to reach the quarterfinals on Saturday night, but he lost 5-4 to John Cooley of Boyertown. He won a match Sunday, then fell in the consolation semifinals, 3-1 to Jason Lisak of Parkland. Kyner then won by forfeit over Cooley for fifth.

Mentzer said, "In the match he lost to Cooley, with about 15 seconds left, Blue (Kyner) hit the most amazing headlock I've ever seen. But he hit it so hard that they came down and hit the mat and he couldn't secure the takedown, and the guy wiggled his head free and came around for two points."

Peck also reached the quarterfinals, on the strength of two pins, but he was edged 3-1 by Antonio Agee of New Kent, Va. He won two consy bouts, then lost 3-1 by Gregg Harvey of Boyertown, and came back to win for fifth place.

Aaron Rump (132) and Drake Brenize (145) each went 3-2, while Spencer Runshaw (113), Cole Grove (126) and Greg Wallace (170) each had a 2-2 record.

Mentzer said, "We did OK. I was a little disappointed in Saturday because we lost some matches I think we should have won. But we wrestled strong today. Brenize had a nice run -- he won three straight overtime matches in the consolations to get to Sunday."

The Trojans finished 20th in the 47-team field.
