TRACK & FIELD: Mercersburg runners break school records

NORTH BETHESDA, Md. - The Mercersburg indoor track teams broke two school records Saturday at the Private and Independent School Invitational at Georgetown Prep.

Sydney Hirokawa broke the indoor school record for the girls 1,000-meter run by eight seconds with a -record time of 3:30.15 to place 15th. On the boys side, Jude Ikekhua broke the Blue Storm indoor record for the 300, finishing 10th overall with a time of 38.08.

The Mercersburg girls team placed 15th of 24 competing girls teams.

Hirokawa also anchored the Blue Storm's fourth-place 4x800 relay that clocked in at 11:28.56. Ryan Geitner, Campbell Frennan and Laila Tijani also ran in the relay.

“We have not raced in three weeks, as the snowstorm interrupted a scheduled meet. And today's meet is a notch up in competition as well," Mercersburg coach David Grady said "With both of these things in mind, I thought the girls responded well and were aggressive in their racing.”

Will Oakley ran the 55 hurdles in 9.72, placing ninth overall for the boys.
