James Buchanan puts 2 in Mid Penn tennis finals

A pair of James Buchanan tennis players will contend for Mid Penn Conference Class AA singles titles Friday morning.

Rachel Martin at No. 1 and Meridyth Sanders at No. 2 battled into the championship match with a pair of wins Thursday.

Martin will face Kathryn Long of Trinity, who is the top seed, while Sanders, the No. 1 seed, will take on Olivia Otstot of East Pennsboro. Martin has already qualified for the District 3 Class 2A singles tournament.

"We had a decent day," JB coach Terri Beegle said. "We played the way we had the whole season."

Martin won a pair of matches, including a tight one in the semifinals, a 7-5, 6-3 verdict over Maddie Young of Bishop McDevitt. Sanders had a bye, then needed three sets to get past Alexandra Borza of Trinity, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.

Beegle said, "Meridyth struggled a little. She sat around most of the morning before playing her first match."

At No. 2 doubles, Leah Wingert and Amber Clark captured a pair of matches, and reached the final. They will play Makayla Burkholder and Christine Tully of McDevitt.

The Rockets' Maggie Strawoet at No. 3 singles, and the No. 1 doubles teams won a match, but lost in the next round.

In the District 3 doubles qualifier, Martin and Strawoet won in the first round, and will play McDevitt's Young and Lexie Foreman in the semifinals Friday. The top three finishers advance to districts.
