Chambersburg boys earn narrow swim win over Shippensburg
Although the Chambersburg boys swim team is not as well-rounded as it has been in the past, one thing remains the same for the Trojans - the raw power of Jacob Greenwood and Avery Barley in the water.
The sophomores continued their strong high school careers Thursday in a non-league meet against Shippensburg, each bringing home two individual victories and a pair of relay wins as the Trojans claimed a narrow 87-75 win over the Greyhounds in a "friendly neighborhood rivalry" meet.
Shippensburg's girls claimed victory in dominant fashion, beating Chambersburg 102-68, led by a three-win night by Makenna Morris, who won two individual races and aided in a 400 free relay victory.
Greenwood, who broke the Chambersburg YMCA pool record in the 400 freestyle with a finish of 4:11.07, paced the field by over 1:10, and later touched the wall more than 23 seconds in front of the pack in the 200 free. Barley won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.68, just over two seconds ahead of Ship's top male swimmer, Sam Nonemaker, who clocked in at 1:03.43. Barley then went on to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.91.
Greenwood and Barley each aided the winning 200 and 400 freestyle teams to a pair of victories at 1:46.21 and 3:52.37, respectively.
"This was a great growing experience for our team," Chambersburg coach Donnie Miller said. "They were relying on each other and every race counted. Fourth versus fifth, fifth versus sixth, those kind of points all came into play today, and I think today, win or lose, girls or boys, I think our team is closer because of this competition."
Nonemaker had a pair of wins, claiming the 200 IM in 2:22.25, and as a member of the 200 medley team which came in first first in 2:17.64.
"We had made a couple of adjustments in our lineup right at the start of the meet and it made a huge difference for us," Shippensburg coach Jeff Kaminski said. "We actually did not expect to even be close - we were expecting it to be a 20-25 point meet - so being in the hunt as long as we were is just a testament to the work that these guys have put in."
For the girls, Morris dominated the pool for Shippensburg, winning the 50 freestyle in 30.20, and the 100 butterfly in 1:13.98. Chambersburg's Ashlyn Ellis and Abbie Reichelderfer each won two individual races and combined for wins in the 200 free relay, which claimed first in 2:08.69. Ellis won the 200 (2:20.31) and 100 (1:05.05) freestyle races, while Reichelderfer won the 200 IM (2:04.46) and the 100 breaststroke (1:26.22).
"We wanted to swim some different events and get some of our newer and younger swimmers some experience, too," Kaminski said. "We set up a really, really good lineup on paper that would allow us to achieve all those things and also get the win.
"With Chambersburg being 3A and us being 2A, our goals do focus more on the Colonial Division and our district meets, but this is still Ship and Chambersburg. There's still a friendly rivalry, so we want to embrace that. We want to go out and compete."
