3 swimmers gain top-10 district finishes

NEW KINGSTOWN - Chambersburg swimmers posted a school record and a personal best and produced a pair of high finishes at the District 3 Swimming Championships on Saturday afternoon.

James Buchanan sophomore Rachel Kimmel also came up with a top-10 finish in Class AA girls, taking seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

For the Trojans, Avery Barley (fifth, 100 backstroke) and Jacob Greenwood (sixth, 500 freestyle) - both freshmen - did well in Class AAA boys competition.

"We know that Avery's time is good enough to qualify for states, and we think Jacob's will be good enough, too," Trojan coach Chad White said. "Both guys missed out in Friday's events by about a tenth of a second."

Barley swam a time of 52.25 in the backstroke, much better than his seed time of 53.83. It was his personal best by two seconds and is just four tenths of a second off the school record held by his coach, White.

White said, "Avery keeps surprising us all. We thought he might do a 52 high, but he came in a 52 low, which is probably in the top 16 in the state. His underwater swimming and his endurance are improving, and he's focused on a lot on his dive. He is pleased."

In the 500, Greenwood broke his own school record by six seconds - it was 4:45.43, but Greenwood swam 4:51.37 Saturday.

"That was his best high school time, but not his personal best," White said. "He went out in 1:48 at the Mid Penns, and he hit 1:52 today and then gradually increased his speed. We were hoping his last 100 could have been about two seconds faster, and if he makes states, that's what we'll be working on."

Also in the AAA 500, Shippensburg's Sam Nonemaker placed 17th in 4:56.95.

JB's Kimmel dropped her seed time almost two seconds in the 100 breaststroke, but finished more than six seconds behind the winner, Nikolette Nolte of Kutztown.

Also for the Rockets, Annaleisse Hissong was 20th in the 500 free and the 400 free relay team of Kayla Snider, Amanda Montgomery, Kimmel and Hissong placed 10th.

For the JB boys in AA, Nick Garbinski (100 free) and Noah Shank (100 breaststroke each placed 16th.
