Dist. 3 swimming: Trojans' Jacob Greenwood earns 6th

NEW KINGSTOWN - Chambersburg freshman Jacob Greenwood got his District 3 swimming career off to a good start Friday, taking sixth place in the Class AAA boys 200 freestyle race.

Greenwood posted a time of 1:44.98, which was under his previous best time of 1:45.50 by about a half second. The winner, Jose Jacome of McCaskey, had a time of 1:41.10.

Chambersburg coach Chad White said, "Taking sixth as a freshman is really good in District 3. Jacob will be really close to making states in the 200 -- he could be just in or just out."

James Buchanan's Nick Garbinski tied for ninth in the AA 50 free in a time of 22.37.

Those were the only top-10 finishes earned by area swimmers Friday on the first day of competition at Cumberland Valley H.S. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. and concludes about 7 p.m.

A pair of Class AA girls came up with good finishes. In the 100 butterfly, Rachel Kimmel of James Buchanan placed 11th with a time of 1:03.09, while Megan Beam of Greencastle-Antrim took 12th in the 50 free in 25.86. The Rocket team of Kayla Snider, Kimmel, Amanda Montgomery and Annaleisse Hissong placed 12th in the 200 medley relay in 2:02.09, dropping nearly five seconds from their seed time.

In AA boys, JB's Noah Shank produced a huge drop in time, going from his seed time of 2:18.50 to a final time of 2:11.42 to place 13th in the 200 individual medley. The 200 medley relay team for the Rockets (Austin Sheppard, Shank, Garbinski and Jarred Moquin) was 15th in 1:49.79, a drop of about three seconds.

Chambersburg's Avery Barley, also a freshman, was 13th in the 50 free with a time of 21.97. He was seeded 21st and dropped his best time by about a half second.

"District 3 is really strong in the 50 this year - usually that time would have been in the top eight," White said. "Avery swam a great race and had a quick time, but it looks like he might miss states by two tenths of a second.

"It was exciting to see the boys do so well today - they have a bright future. And the events they have the best chance to make states in are tomorrow."

Also in AAA boys, Sam Nonemaker of Shippensburg swam a personal best time of 2:02.89 to place 16th in the 200 IM.

In AAA girls, the Trojans' Ashlyn Ellis posted her best time ever, 2:02.91, in the 200 free.
