Trojans' Nick Cover 3rd in District 3-AAA diving

WEST LAWN - Chambersburg sophomore Nick Cover placed third in Saturday's District 3 Class AAA boys diving competition at Wilson High School, and now has his sights set on a medal at states.

Cover, who took fourth at districts a year ago, scored 446.15 points for his 11-dive performance.

That put him behind Hershey's dominant Jake Hedrick (511.20) and Nicholas Tomczyk of Exeter Township (471.80).

"I missed on one dive, but I don't think it would have affected my place," Cover said. "Taking third is about what I expected."

Shippensburg's Jared Keim placed ninth with a score of 319.90. In the girls competition, Ship's MacKenzie Durf placed 12th with 323.65 points.

Cover said his best dives Saturday were a front 1 1/2 with a full twist, and a reverse dive. The competitors made five dives each and Cover was in fourth place. After three more dives he was third, and that's where he stayed after the final three.

Chambersburg coach Ryan Crider said, "Definitely his best dive today was the front 1 1/2 - he scored 53.30  points on that. His twisting dives were outstanding today, too. He has three of those, and they combined for 147.10 points.

"He's just that kind of athlete - he stayed focused in some very heavy competition. He has a few dives we may want to add for states, too."

The PIAA event is March 16 at Bucknell University.
