The Chambersburg softball team is one step closer to reclaiming its District 3 title after a 3-1 win over Hempfield in the Class 6A quarterfinals on Friday.

"The 11-day layoff showed today," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "We dealt with some adversity but we showed some mental toughness and battled through. When you get to districts and states you battle to survive to the next game, and we did that."

Leah Hunt threw a five-hitter for Chambersburg, and struck out six batters. Taylor Myers, Laken Myers and Kirsten Pugh batted in runs for the Trojans.

The Lady Trojans will face Central Dauphin on Tuesday in the district semifinal. Most recently Chambersburg lost to the Rams 5-1.

"We're going to face (Sam) Gress, and she's one of the best pitchers in the area," Skultety said. "We need to play the defense we played today and get some timely hits - that's going to be key."

JB softball upsets West Perry: The James Buchanan Lady Rockets pulled off a stellar upset over No. 1 West Perry on Friday to advance to the District 3 Class 4A semifinal.

James Buchanan claimed a 3-2 win over the Mustangs thanks to a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. After a run was walked in with no outs in the top of the seventh, Jenna Mongold hit a two RBI single to left field.

"I asked the girls for something special before the last inning, go to the plate and give me your very best effort," James Buchanan coach Troy Pittman said. "Grace (Amsley) started with a single and Kyrstin (Nichols) walked allowing for the top of the line-up to come through."

Jenna Mongold had three hits and two RBIs, and pitched a complete game. Alyssa Blair had three hits.

"West Perry scored 13 runs including four home runs against us earlier this season," Pittman said. "Jenna pitched very well executing our game plan hitting her spots and the defense had to have a very good game. Maddie Bailey made several outstanding plays and Cara Bender made a diving catch in centerfield."

West Perry challenged in the bottom of the eighth, but Paige Doyle made the game-ending catch with an over the shoulder grab at second base.

Pittman said, "When the ball was hit, I figured the game was going to be tied but Paige came out of nowhere for the big catch to end the game."
