P.O. Athletes of the Week, April 24- 30

MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Matt Huston, McConnellsburg

"It felt great to beat Southern Fulton, especially the way we fought back," Huston said. "We were down early, but didn't give up. We got a little momentum from Weston's (Brunner) home run - that got us going."

Sport: Baseball

Grade: Senior

Positions: Pitcher, third base

Height: 5-foot-11

Parents: Mary and Jeff Huston

College: Will attend Allegany C.C. with a major in business.

Surprising fact: Huston plays guitar.

Favorite team: TCU (his sister attends school there)

Favorite athlete: Madison Bumgarner

Coach Brian Ramsey: "We brought him in during the fifth inning and they had the bases loaded and no outs. He got a double-play grounder that they scored a run on, then got another grounder to end the inning, and that was the big turning point. Then he hit the double off the wall to win it."

Statistics: Monday, in a 4-3 win over Tussey Mountain, Huston got the win with 6 innings of mound work ... Friday, against rival Southern Fulton, Huston entered in relief in the fifth inning and got out of a big jam, and the sixth he hit a two-run double to score the tying and winning run.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Ally Brown, Greencastle-Antrim

"This week has been a real confidence boost for me," Brown said. "Last year I was more of a slugger, but I'm all about the BRIs this year. I came into my senior year wanting to hit all of these home runs, but that's just not who I am this year. It's a different mindset."

Sport: Softball

Grade: Senior

Positions: Pitcher, outfield

Height: 5-foot-6

Parents: Stacy Bosko and Tom Brown

College: Brown has her eyes set on becoming a nurse practitioner and hopes to attend George Mason.

Surprising fact: She always drinks a sweet tea during a softball game - McDonalds is her favorite.

Favorite team: Pittsburgh Steelers

Favorite athlete: Jenny Finch, USA Softball

From coach Mark DeCarli: “I told her, great players step up when they need to, and she did that. Last year we were able to count on her for the big hit, and she’s picked up right where she left off. I’m very proud of the way she’s been playing this year.”

Stats: Brown collected a pair of wins in the circle this week, including a perfect game against South Western during the Big Spring Tournament. She also had three hits and two RBIs in an all-important Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Shippensburg.
