F-F Highlights: McConnellsburg halts SF's win streak
It seems when it comes to Southern Fulton and McConnellsburg, odds, statistics and trends don't matter.
Friday in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference rivalry baseball game, McConnellsburg knocked off the streaking Indians for the second time this year, claiming a 7-6 victory.
Prior to traveling to McConnellsburg for the matchup, Southern Fulton had won seven straight games in dominant fashion.
"The boys always suit up for Southern Fulton," McConnellsburg coach Brian Ramsey said. "They are a really good team and this was a well-played ballgame. It feels good to come out on the winning end. I think they only have three losses on the season, and two are from us, so that is a good feeling because we won't see them again (this year)."
The Indians held a 5-2 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth inning before McConnellsburg set the scene for the rally. A single and three walks brought in a run before Southern Fulton made a pitching change. Chase Novak welcomed the new pitcher with a two-RBI double to tie the game.
After Southern Fulton's Mitch Potter batted in a run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, Matt Huston responded with a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning, bringing in the eventual game-winning run.
Huston went on to close out the game on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings, striking out two along the way.
Ramsey said, "Matt threw on Monday so I didn't want to throw him too many innings, but he stepped up for us tonight hitting and pitching."
Weston Brunner hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to kick off scoring for McConnellsburg.
"He is just coming back from injury, but he made really good contact and got us started," Ramsey said. "That put spark into the kids and that was what they needed."
Southern Fulton's Branden Lynch, Eaven Gordon and Mitch Potter each had two hits and an RBI.

- Fannett-Metal's Morgan Ritchey had four hits in a 8-5 win over Southern Huntingdon.
- Madison Koontz had two hits, including a triple and two RBIs, in McConnellsburg's 5-2 win over Southern Fulton.
Boys tennis
James Buchanan had finalists in three matches Friday at the Mid Penn Conference Class 2A boys tennis championships. At No. 1 singles, Isaac Shenton fell in a hard-fought match to East Pennsboro’s Nemanja Jovis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Micah Wise was defeated in another tight one at No. 2, 7-6 (8), 7-5, to Camp Hill’s Alex Landis. In the District 3 doubles qualifier bracket, Shenton and Wise dropped a 6-1, 6-4 match to Camp Hill’s Spencer and Alex Landis. The JB duo did qualify for districts.
In Class 3A, Waynesboro's Evan Hine was knocked off in the semifinals by No. 1 seed Ben Clary of Palmyra, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
Track & field
- On day two of the Penn Relays, Greencastle-Antrim's Campbell Parker placed seventh in the boys discus with a throw of 178-2, and was the second PA finisher.
- Chambersburg's Kelton Chastulik placed 10th in the boys shot put at the Penn Relays with a heave of 57-10, just five inches shy of his school record.
