F-F Highlights: Chambersburg baseball pulls out thriller

After losing a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning, then falling behind 2-1 in the top of the ninth, things did not look good for the Chambersburg baseball team, which has struggled to score this season.

But a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth produced a 3-2 victory over Carlisle in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division game at Greene Township Park on Wednesday afternoon.

"To come back after we went down, hopefully this will light a spark," Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. "Confidence-wise, this should help."

Max Armstrong led off the ninth with a walk and was bunted to second by Bryce Kendall. Spencer Hockensmith doubled to center to bring in the tying run. Bailey Leedy then grounded a single into right field and pinch runner Devin Carbaugh raced home to plate the winning run.

Folmar said, "We put together some good at-bats there and finally got big hits when we needed them."

Kaden Hoover gave up four hits in 6 2/3 innings and Spencer Seaman gained the win in relief.

Pair of good losses: State College handed Chambersburg a pair of losses in track & field (83-67 in boys, 95-55 in girls), but both Trojan coaches were pleased with how their team fared.

Boys coach Bob Walker said, "They are the defending state champions and only 28 of our 60 kids have done track before, so I thought we really grew today as a team. We had a really good day on the track."

Tyeshawn Worrell won the 100 and 200 for the Trojans (1-1, 1-1 MPC), Trayton Barnette was a winner in both hurdles events, and Quintan Barbour won the 400 and made up a 40-meter deficit to help the 4x400 relay team win. In the field, Kelton Chastulik and Myles Braxton went 1-2 in the shot put and discus, and Nate Reed won the javelin with PR (155-6).

"This was one of the better dual meets we've had," Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said. "We had some really nice results, but State College is really tough."

Abby Yourkavitch captured the 800 and 1600 and helped the 4x800 relay team to a win. Ariana Appenzellar won the 200 and ran on the winning 4x100 team, and Kaylee Mowery took the 3200. Reagan Winebrenner had her second-best throw ever in the shot (38-2) and her best in the discus (123-4, 4 inches off the school record), but was second in both events to Jordan Bair.

Spartans sweep: McConnellsburg had a good day on the diamond as the baseball team and the softball team claimed SHL/ICC wins over Fulton County rival Southern Fulton. The baseball team won 10-7, while the softball team won 10-6.

After the SF softball team came back to tie the game at two, McConnellsburg broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning, and held off a Southern Fulton comeback in the sixth.

Three Lady Spartans batted in two runs, led by Carly Swope, who was 3-for-4 at the plate. Justice Seville and freshman Destiny Hall also had a pair of RBIs.

Southern Fulton’s Erica Hoffman was 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Janelle Appel hit 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Similar to the softball team, McConnellsburg baseball had a productive fourth, scoring eight runs and rack up a decisive lead. Chase Novak, Trey Swope and Cale Harman each had two RBIs, while Matt Huston went 3-for-4 and Brice Feagley was 2-for-3.

Dylan Gordon had two RBIs for Southern Fulton.
