F-F Highlights: 'Boro downs Herd in 8 innings

The Waynesboro baseball team withstood a late comeback by Carlisle in a non-league game on Saturday to beat the Thundering Herd in extra innings, 5-4.

Carlisle came back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into the eighth inning, but a pair of leadoff singles in the bottom of the eighth by Cole Reed and Hunter Clever put the Indians (2-2) in good position. Preston Witte was walked to load the bases, followed by another walk drawn by freshman Cole Stouffer that brought in the winning run.

Clay Wolfe pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed just three hits. Cal Davis relieved Wolfe in the seventh inning to grab the win in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Maidens bats alive again: The Carlisle softball team kept Waynesboro on its toes through the first six innings in a close non-league game, but patience paid off for the Maidens. In the top of the seventh, Waynesboro knocked in four runs thanks to a three-run homer by Jenna Powell.

Katie Wise led off to get on base, and an error on a bunt hit by Alexis Rosenberry set the scene for Powell’s heroics.

“Jenna did what Jenna does best,” Waynesboro coach Aaron Burke said. “She hit it hard and the ball left the park in a hurry. If we continue to score nine or 10 runs per game we are going to be hard to beat."

Tough day at the office: Chambersburg's boys volleyball team competed in the Bobcat Invitational at Northeastern on Saturday and had a tough go of it.

In pool play, the Trojans lost to Northeastern (30-21), Schuylkill Valley (30-19), Quakertown (31-29) and Council Rock North (30-27). In a play-in, Chambersburg defeated Garden Spot 30-23, then fell 15-8, 15-13 to Cochranton. In a SIlver Division playoff, Saegertown defeated the Trojans, 25-22.

"We struggled very early and never really seemed to fully pick ourselves up," Chambersburg coach Marta Helfrick said. "We got plenty of play in and we have a good idea of what we need to do this week to be successful in our league matches."

Trojan leaders included Trey Stepler (17 kills, 19 digs), Nate Walker (12 kills, 5 block kills), Kellen Stepler (32 assists), Wes Newman 21 digs and Dylan Culler (16 digs, 2 aces).

Baseball

• Mercersburg's Jayvien Sandridge threw the area's first seven-inning no-hitter, against Kiski, to lead the Blue Storm to a 7-0 non-league victory. He struck out nine and walked two batters. Eli Riley went 2-for-3, including a home run, while Brandon Thomas was 3-for-4 from the plate and batted in two runs. 

Track & field

• Girls, Mercersburg Academy’s Isiuwa Oghagbon won the shot put (35-02.25) and the discus (113-11) at the Potomac Invitational.
• Boys, Alex Solganik of Mercersburg won the 800 at the Potomac Invitational in 2:06.46, and Carlos Austin won the high jump, clearing 5-08.
