F-F Highlights: Greencastle baseball cruises in opener

The start to Greencastle-Antrim's baseball season opener did not go well.

But the rest of the day went just fine and the Blue Devils rolled to a 14-4 victory over West York in a non-league game Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to four unearned runs off starter Cade Bender, but Bender was strong after that. He allowed five hits and three walks and struck out eight in five innings.

"In that first inning, everything that we had emphasized in practice, we did wrong," G-A coach Eric Shaner said. "But after that we were fine, and Bender was lights out in the last four innings."

The Blue Devils tied the game with a run in the second and three in the third, then scored eight in the fourth. West York made several errors and a bunch of walks in the inning (11 walks in the game), and Cade McDowell had two hits and three RBIs.

"We were breaking in nine new starters, so it was nice to get that many walks to help us out," Shaner said.

Great start

The Greencastle-Antrim softball team had a well-rounded season opener against West York on Saturday, getting good pitching, hitting and defense in a 7-0 victory.

Ally Brown earned the win with a five-hitter, walking one and striking out six.

Jenna Carty and Hailey Long each cracked a home run, Carty went 3-for-3 and Morgan Wagaman, Mackenzie Oberholzer and Ali Sherman each had a pair of hits. The Blue Devils committed only one error.

G-A coach Mark DeCarli said, "We were a little flat because we didn't have any scrimmages, but overall I was pleased. The defense and pitching were very good."
