F-F Highlights: 9 earn places at Mid Penn swimming

Franklin County produced a very good day at the Mid Penn swimming championships on Friday, with all three area teams each placing in the top eight in three events.

The swimmers will be back at Cumberland Valley's pool Saturday for the second half of the championships.

The highest finish came in the boys 200 freestyle - Chambersburg's Jacob Greenwood came in third with a time of 1:45.49, while State College's Tobias Van Dyke won in 1:41.50.

"He was a little frustrated he didn't swim as fast in the second 100 as he did in the first," Trojan coach Donnie Miller said. "But that's the kind of race he'll have to swim if he wants to be on the podium when the big meets come around."

The James Buchanan 200 medley relay team of Annaleisse Hissong, Rachel Kimmel, Annabelle McCullough and Sarah Kimmel hit a time of 1:53.57 to place fourth. Hershey won the event in 1:47.29.

Rocket coach Lori McCullough said, "That was a new team record time. The young ladies did an outstanding job of dealing with the pressures of a big meet. They were seeded sixth and placed fourth and all four legs improved their times."

Four individual swimmers captured a sixth-place medal - JB's Annabelle McCullough (girls 100 butterfly, 59.49), Shippensburg's Makenna Morris (girls 200 IM, 2:15.34), Ship's Sam Nonemaker (boys 200 IM, 2:01.77) and the Rockets' Nick Garbinski (boys 50 free, 21.95).

Nonemaker's time broke the school record, while McCullough and Garbinski both had PR times.

Also for the Greyhounds, Madison Osanitsch placed seventh in the 200 free in 1:58.82.

Ship coach Jeff Kaminski said, "It was a really good first day for us. Because we're Class AA, we use Mid Penns as a tuneup for districts, and going up against this good competition really helps."

For Chambersburg, Ashlyn Ellis placed eighth in the 200 free in 2:00.12 and CJ Pong took eighth in the boys 200 IM in 2:02.83.

Miller said, "We had 11 girls compete today and all 11 had at least one personal best. Ashlyn really wanted to break 2:00, but she did swim over two seconds faster than her PR and 5.5 seconds under her seed time. Abbie Reichelsderfer had a PR in the 200 IM and we hope both of those girls can get into districts."

James Buchanan swim coach Lori McCullough: "It takes a lot mentally to go into a venue like the Mid Penn championships with a small team like us. We ultimately got sandwiched between two much larger teams in the stands and had to fight for oxygen. But our mighty little team persevered."

Boys basketball

• Southern Fulton ran out to a 36-11 halftime lead and defeated Fannett-Metal 72-29 on Friday. Dylan Gordon (20 points) and Chase Varner and Austin Schriever had 10 each. For the Tigers, Mikell McGee scored 11.
• Despite a loss to McConnellsburg, Forbes Road senior Owen Gilbert scored a career-high 15 points on Senior Night. 

Girls basketball

• Peddie outscored Mercersburg Academy 19-3 in the third period to bust open their Mid-Atlantic Prep League tournament game. For the Blue Storm, Olivia Coleman (9 points, 8 rebounds) and Isiuwa Oghagbon (8, 8) led the way.
