Other than the third quarter, Shippensburg outplayed East Pennsboro in a non-league boys basketball game Saturday night, but that one period almost did the Greyhounds in. They did prevail, however, 57-47, to run their win streak to four games.
The Panthers trailed 31-20 at halftime, but put on a third-quarter blitz, outscoring Ship 17-4. During the period, Mitch Henry banged in three 3-pointers and hit the 1,000-point mark for his career. He scored 22 in the game.
"There was a big shift of momentum in that quarter," Ship coach Ray Staver said. "We were down five at one point, so it was nice to see our guys get back into it. We outscored them 22-10 in the fourth and made a lot of free throws. We played three good quarters and got a good win on the road."
Cody Gustafson led the Hounds (15-5) with 21 points and Carter Van Scyoc added 16.
James Buchanan's girls and boys basketball teams suffered losses to Southern Fulton to end the regular season.
On the girls side, it was a dogfight in the opening frame, but the Rockets managed just eight points over the next two quarters and Southern Fulton easily pulled away for a 47-29 victory.
"The first half, our defense wasn't near what it should be," SF coach Meagan Mellott said. "I knew that this game would be this outcome if they buckled down and played defense, and they did. We focused more in the second half, and it made a huge difference."
Olivia Mottern and Emily Bradshaw led the Indians with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while no Rocket had more than seven.
Later, the Rockets' boys team took a hard hit early, trailing 12-1 after the opening frame and 18-3 early in the second quarter. But JB made a game out of it, pulling within eight in the fourth before Southern Fulton closed out a 65-49 win.
SF's Dylan Gordon led all scorer with 21 points, while Gabe Stotler and Mitch Potter each scored 11. For the Rockets, Jared Pine led the way with 19 points, and Hunter Reath was just one shy of his career-high, finishing with 17 points.
McConnellsburg broke up a tie game after three quarters to defeat Southern Huntingdon 55-50. Bronwyne Mellott was held to 14 points, but McKenzie Gelvin had 20 points and Kellyn Perry 13 points and eight rebounds.
Mercersburg Academy was outscored 18-4 in the third period in a 67-32 loss to Lawrenceville. Olivia Coleman led the Blue Storm with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Mercersburg Academy went 3-1 at the Mid-Atlantic Prep League tournament to finish 12-6 overall. Steve Minh (126 pounds) was 4-0 with three pins, Aurelius Dunbar of Greencastle (145-152) was 3-0 with two pins, and Joseph Yonke (113) went 3-1.
