F-F Highlights: Waynesboro girls win in OT
Gut-check win
With a win streak on the line, Waynesboro's girls basketball team took it to the wire with Boiling Springs in a Mid Penn Colonial Division match Tuesday night.
The teams were knotted at 42-42 when the final buzzer sounded. But the Maidens finished 6-for-10 from the line in overtime to eke out a 52-45 win over the Bubblers.
Sara Gsell was a big factor in keeping 'Boro in the game. She had six of her 11 points in the final frame. Cat Weber paced the Maidens with 16 points, while Olivia Gardenhour followed closely behind with 13.
Championship clinched
With yet another victory for the Shippensburg girls swim team, the Lady Hounds are officially the outright Mid Penn Colonial Division champions. They defeated Big Spring, 106-77, to remain undefeated.
Madison Osanitsch and Makenna Morris were both double-victors for Ship. Osanitsch captured first in the 50 freestyle (26.79) and 100 backstroke (1:05.82), while Morris was the winner in the 200 IM (2:18.47) and 100 butterfly (1:04.31).
Top performers
Boys basketball
- Shalom Christian suffered an overtime loss at the hands of Grace Academy, but it wasn't for lack of trying on the part of Chase Martin. He scored a career-high 20 points, including five buckets from beyond the arc.
Girls basketball
- After a sluggish start in which Mercersburg committed 12 turnovers in the opening frame, the Blue Storm came back to defeat Gerstell Academy, 37-30. Olivia Coleman and Isiuwa Oghagbon accounted for most of Mercersburg's offense with 17 and 12 points, resepctively. Both capped off double-doubles with 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
- Emily Bard and Tori Stouffer each scored 15 points to help Cumberland Valley Christian to a 50-35 win over Faith Christian.
Boys swimming
- Despite taking a loss to Hershey, Chambersburg's Jacob Greenwood picked up a pair of individual victories. He captured first in the 200 (1:58.94) and the 400 (4:15.47) freestyle races.
Quotable
Shippensburg boys basketball coach Ray Staver, after the Greyhounds avenged an earlier loss to Greencastle-Antrim: "They kicked our butt every day of the week and twice on Sunday in that game. We challenged our kids to take pride. They had 19 layups against us the first time, and you have to take it personally when someone does that to you."
