F-F 5 Things to Watch, Jan. 16-21
Now past the midway point of the season, here are the top matchups to watch this week in Franklin and Fulton counties.
MONDAY
Delone Catholic at Greencastle-Antrim boys basketball, 7:30 p.m.: Greencastle-Antrim will be looking to rebound after a tough loss to Mechanicsburg at Saturday's Dunks for Drew showcase.
Although the Blue Devils sit at 8-5 overall, they've won just two of seven games against non-league opponents. G-A will look to right the ship against Delone (8-6), which is sixth in the power rankings in Class 3A.
Greencastle boasts strong depth in Casey Hoover, Brandon Stuhler and Ian Gelsinger, who are all averaging nine points per game or more.
TUESDAY
Central Dauphin at Chambersburg swimming, 4:15 p.m.: After a lengthy break, Chambersburg's swim teams will be back in action in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division meet with Central Dauphin.
The Trojans have not had a meet since Jan. 4, as last week's matchup with Mifflin County was postponed.
Chambersburg could be eyeing a pair of league victories against the winless CD Rams. Top swimmers so far this season for the Trojans have been Avery Barley and Jacob Greenwood, and on the girls side, Abbie Reichelderfer has been one of the biggest standouts.
THURSDAY
Southern Fulton at McConnellsburg girls basketball, 7:30 p.m.: For the first time since last year's District 5 Class 1A championship, Southern Fulton and McConnellsburg will face off.
This season, the teams are in two different classifications, as the Lady Spartans moved up to 2A, so this year's regular season games mean that much more in this rivalry game.
Both teams boast strong records, as McConnellsburg currently sits at 6-3 and the Indians are 7-4. Bronwyne Mellott and McKenzie Gelvin have been the top two scorers for the Spartans, while Olivia Mottern has carried much of the offensive load for Southern Fulton. Mottern is currently chasing down SF's all-time school record and is just 105 points from the mark.
State College at Chambersburg wrestling, 7 p.m.: Chambersburg is 9-3 in dual meets and has only three left before the cutoff date for the District 3 team championships. Currently, the Trojans are ranked No. 12 and the district tournament bracket includes the top 16 teams for Class 3A.
Of the three matches left, Chambersburg will be a big underdog against Central Dauphin next week, and a prohibitive favorite when it hosts Waynesboro on Jan. 28.
So that makes this Thursday's Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match against State College at CASHS Field House pretty important. The Little Lions have been involved in plenty of tight duals - two of their defeats came by a total of three points, and they own a 38-36 win over Mifflin County, a team the Trojans are 1-1 against.
SATURDAY
YAIAA vs. Mid Penn Challenge showcase, Waynesboro at Gettysburg boys basketball, 8 p.m.: A day jam-packed with seven boys basketball games will be capped off with Waynesboro taking on the host Gettysburg Warriors.
The Indians should have the advantage in Saturday's contest with an 8-5 record. Gettysburg (4-11) is ranked 30th in the District 3 Class 5A power rankings, compared to Waynesboro, which currently sits at 16th.
In the Indians' loss to G-A last week, coach Tom Hoffman said one of the only individual standouts of that game was Trevor Jones, who came off the bench with fire and energy. Cameron Keck and Evan Hine are currently averaging double figures.
Other matchups for the YAIAA vs. Mid Penn Challenge include Bermudian Springs vs. Camp Hill (11:30 a.m.); South Western vs. Boiling Springs (12:55); Central York vs. Bishop McDevitt (2:20); West York vs. Mechanicsburg (3:45); Spring Grove vs. Susquehanna Township (5:10); and New Oxford vs. Palmyra (6:35).
