F-F 5 things to watch, Jan. 2-7

New year, a new slate of exciting F-F matchups. Don't miss these top five events happening in the first full week of 2017.

TUESDAY

Shippensburg at Waynesboro boys basketball, 7:30 p.m.: At the start of the season it was thought that these two teams could be battling for a Mid Penn Colonial Division title come February. And while Shippensburg has been on a tear, winning six straight to start the season, Waynesboro has the opportunity to give the Greyhounds a run for their money.

The Indians started the year strong, despite some minor setbacks, including their only MPC loss to Northern York in a surprising 20-point defeat. But much like Shippensburg, 'Boro has speed and a handful of sharpshooters. Both teams boast a talented point guard in Shippensburg's Cody Gustafson and Waynesboro's Kyle Hoffman, who both drive a fast-paced effort on both sides of the ball.

They Greyhounds are on a hot-shooting streak right now, taking down Susquehanna Township in the final of the Hound Invitational Tournament, knocking down 10 3-pointers. Clayton Stine had a breakout game, scoring 12 points thanks to three 3-pointers and a 3-for-4 performance from the foul line.

Waynesboro at Shippensburg girls basketball, 7:30 p.m.: Much like the view from the boys side of the Mid Penn Colonial division, Waynesboro and Shippensburg girls will likely be battling with Greencastle-Antrim for the division crown, and Tuesday will be the first taste of what's shaping to be an exciting MPC girls race.

The Maidens are on a five-game winning streak, including a Biglerville Tournament championship in which they outscored opponents 119-46, while Shippensburg's start to the season shows much improvement since last year. The Lady Hounds have competed against some of the top programs in the area in a tough non-league schedule and remain undefeated in the Mid Penn Colonial Division. However, Shippensburg has not played against the top half of the division, making Waynesboro the team's first real divisional test of the season.

The Maidens boast an experienced starting lineup led by Cat Weber, who is inching closer to the 1,000-point mark with just 51 to go, while Shippensburg's Kara Newell and Mariah Martin lead the Lady Hounds.

Chambersburg at Central Dauphin boys basketball, 7:30 p.m.: Despite a fine showing at the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament, Chambersburg hit a patch of bad luck in the latter part of 2016, and is still searching for its first win in the Mid Penn Commonwealth.

A win Tuesday against Central Dauphin could be the Trojans' ticket out of the MPC slump and a nice way to kick off the new year. Chambersburg enters Tuesday's contest with some momentum swinging in its favor, as the Trojans are fresh off a win at the Gettysburg Holiday Tournament, and playing some of their best ball in the championship game, limiting turnovers and putting up big points, led by tournament MVP Cole Christian.

Central Dauphin has a single win in the Commonwealth.

WEDNESDAY

Forbes Road at Fannett-Metal boys basketball, 7:30 p.m.: Forbes Road hit its stride in the holiday break, claiming a tournament championship at the Claysburg-Kimmel tournament with a 43-39 win over Northeast Bradford.

On the other hand, Fannett-Metal made an appearance in its holiday tournament championship, but fell to Shalom Christian in a close title game. The Tigers hold an edge with recently crowned boys all-time leading scorer Mikell McGee, but the Cardinals have also proven that they can score.

SATURDAY

Chambersburg at Wilson Duals, 9 a.m.: Fresh off of an impressive performance at the Trojan Wars, Chambersburg heads to the Wilson Duals on Saturday, hoping for another successful tournament showing.

Drake Brenize at 152 had a fine showing at the Trojan Wars, making it to the championship match, while Seth Runshaw piled up four wins at 120 and advanced to the final.

Drew Peck was Chambersburg's only champion at 182, and he was dominating. Peck earned his third Trojan Wars title with four pins - in 2:52, 0:26, 0:55 and 0:39 in the final.
