It's the most wonderful time of the year. No - not because winter break is right around the corner - but because conference competition is beginning to heat up. Don't miss these top five events around Franklin and Fulton counties this week.

MONDAY

Northern York at Greencastle-Antrim boys basketball, 7:30: The Blue Devils host Northern York on Monday in a Mid Penn Colonial Division clash which could prove to be a big one.

Leading scorer Casey Hoover is just 12 points away from hitting the 1,000-point mark for his career. A Greencastle win will also tighten the early race for the Colonial Division even more, as Waynesboro and Shippensburg are also unbeaten in the MPC.

TUESDAY

Shippensburg wrestling at Big Spring, 7:30: Last week, Shippensburg proved it could match up with Boiling Springs in a 33-30 win over the Bubblers, who were projected to be a top contender for the Mid Penn Colonial Division crown. And after a stellar showing at the Carlisle Holiday Tournament, claiming four titles and a second-place team finish, it could be time for the Greyhounds to check off another top MPC wrestling team this season.

Shippensburg travels to Big Spring in what could potentially be the last big division challenge on the docket for the Greyhounds this season.

Watch out for Shippensburg's Eddie Ocker, who placed second at the Carlisle Tournament at 152. Last season Ocker was pinned against Big Spring while competing at 145 - now up a weight class, Ocker will look to avenge his record against the Bulldogs. Ship also fell in a major decision at 152 last season as Big Spring claimed a 51-18 win.

WEDNESDAY

Shippensburg basketball doubleheader vs. Big Spring, girls at 6:30, boys at 8 p.m.: The Bulldogs travel to Shippensburg on Wednesday for a Mid Penn Colonial doubleheader. Shippensburg's boys head into the week unbeaten in the MPC, and the girls, despite a pair of losses over the weekend, remain unbeaten in division play thanks to a hefty win over Northern York.

Big Spring only boys' loss of the season is to Waynesboro, which downed the Bulldogs 75-46, but the Dawgs also upset Boiling Springs last week 52-44. Shippensburg has one loss on the season to New Oxford - and it was a close one. Keep an eye on Cody Gustafson, who has proved his big hands are not only good for catching footballs - but also for scoring buckets. He is leading the Greyhounds with four straight double-figure performances, averaging 14 points per game.

The Lady Bulldogs have had a rough start to the season, while the Lady Hounds' tough competition to start the season should only help in Mid Penn Colonial Division play. Led by Liz Logan, who averages more than 14 points per game, Shippensburg will want to get back on the winning side after two losses over the weekend.

Chambersburg gymnastics Winter Invitational, 7 p.m.: Waynesboro knocked off Chambersburg last season for the Winter Invitational title thanks to phenom Alex Stoops, who earned top scores on the way to sweeping each event.

Stoops returns to the gym this season, while Chambersburg lost a strong performer in Abby Zeger, but the return of top gymnasts Jocelyn Kibbe and Jaelynn Walker could help Chambersburg in its kickoff event.

THURSDAY

Shippensburg swimming at Chambersburg, 4 p.m.: Shippensburg kicked off the swim season in a big way last week, sweeping Trinity and etching a new name in the Greyhound record book, while Chambersburg looks to rebuild.

For the boys, keep an eye on Shippensburg's Sam Nonemaker, who broke the school record in the 100 backstroke last week, while Chambersburg sophomores Avery Barley and Jacob Greenwood return to the pool after a successful freshman campaign.

For the girls, Chambersburg's top swimmer, Ashlyn Ellis, returns, along with Shippensburg's Makenna Morris will be a force to be reckoned with in the girls freestyle races.
