Southern Huntingdon continued to play man-to-man defense against Fannett-Metal in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference boys basketball game Friday night.
In hindsight, the Rockets might want to change their strategy next time they play F-M.
Senior Mikell McGee torched the nets for 49 points to lead the Tigers to an 85-69 victory to enable Fannett-Metal to go to 2-0 for the season.
It was the career-best total for the high-scoring guard, who had hit 42 points three times previously in his career and went for 45 once.
“Actually, he didn’t play the whole game - we took him out with about three minutes left or he would have had 50-some,” F-M coach Jeff Winegardner said. “He really came on in the second half and was on fire.
“I thought they might go to a box-and-one on him, but they never did.”
McGee dropped in 20 field goals, including seven 3-pointers. He was a mere 2-for-5 at the foul line.
Lucas Wingert added 15 points for the Tigers.
“The boys did OK, but the games will be getting tougher for us,” Winegardner said.
Girls basketball: Brooke Emge scored 23 points - her career high - and added 10 steals to help Shalom Christian beat Veritas Academy 47-35 in the first round of the High Point Baptist Tournament.
Waynesboro’s Cat Weber poured in 19 points as the Maidens downed Big Spring 54-42, outscoring the Bulldogs 37-18 in the middle quarters. Weber is now 84 points away from 1,000 for her career.
Boys basketball: Jonah Stains tallied 55 points Friday for Shalom Christian - but it came in two games at the Shenandoah Valley Tournament. He had 35 in a 90-57 win over Grace Brethren and another 20 as the Flames beat Lynchburg Homeschool, 56-51. In the second game, Coby Roseman scored 13, which was a career high.
Brycen Hohman posted a career-high 19 points for Forbes Road on 9-for-15 shooting, but the Cardinals dropped a 63-57 decision to Tussey Mountain.
Waynesboro’s boys sank 11 of 22 from behind the 3-point line in a 75-46 win over Big Spring. Kyle Hoffman piled up nine assists for the Indians.
