F-F Highlights: Taryn Parks competes at nationals

National race

Greencastle-Antrim freshman Taryn Parks made a long-distance journey to compete in the Foot Locker Cross Country national championships at Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday.

Unfortunately, Parks struggled, and finished 40th in the 40-girl field, which included the top 10 finishers from four regional races. Parks had qualified seventh in the Northeast race.

On Saturday, however, Parks - the only freshman in the race - started out behind the pack and was not able to move up. She finished with a time of 19:16.6. The winner, Claudia Lane of California, won in 17:04.8.

In the boys race, Carlisle senior Noah Affolder placed sixth in 15:10.3 and his sophomore brother Sam was 40th in 16:122.6. The boys winner was Reed Brown of Texas (15:01.8).

Shippensburg placed seventh in the Cumberland Valley Kickoff Tournament, and had four wrestlers come home with medals.

Chandler Olson (132) and Cameron Tinner (285) each finished as a runner-up, while Cole Forrester (195) and Collin Dolbin (220) each placed third.

Olson fell 6-3 to Austin DeSanto of Exeter, who was a PIAA runner-up last year. Tinner met up with Brendan Furman of Canon-MacMillen and was handed a 17-4 major decision in which Furman scored six takedowns.

Forrester rallied for a 4-3 verdict over Dennis Karas of Exeter, while Dolbin scored a pin in 2:24 over Jacob Frank of Easton, which was Dolbin's fourth pin of the tourney.
