H.S. Highlights: Greencastle girls volleyball upsets Palmyra
On the final day of the regular season, the Greencastle-Antrim girls volleyball team showed District 3 what it can do with a 3-0 upset over Palmyra in a Mid Penn Keystone contest.
Palmyra was previously the only undefeated team in the Keystone, and is the top-ranked District 3 Class 3A girls volleyball team with just two losses on the season prior to Thursday.
Greencastle took down the Cougars 25-16 and 25-12 in the first two sets, but Palmyra came back to challenge the Blue Devils in the third. Greencastle battled back to claim a 25-22 win in the third set to complete the sweep.
The Blue Devils were led by Keri Gearhart, who had 13 kills, seven digs and two blocks, followed by Baylee Schaeffer with 12 kills, six digs and two aces. Gabby Baughman had 31 assists for Greencastle (11-8, 6-5 MPK).
Boys soccer
Shalom Christian 3, Calvary Christian 1: Shalom punched its ticket to the MDCC championship game with a 3-1 semifinal victory over Calvary on Thursday. Tucker King, Chase Martin and Peter Livermore each scored while Jonah Stains had an assist on the opening goal. Shalom (16-3) will take on the winner of Grace Academy and Broadfording in the title game Saturday at 7 p.m. at Shalom.
"It's been a rough week (dealing with the death of a sixth-grade student at our school)," Shalom coach Chris Lehman said, "but I was very proud of how the team was able to channel their emotions in a positive form on the field, and now we're looking forward to the championship game Saturday."

Boys soccer
Forbes Road 3, Belleville Mennonite 0: Forbes Road held a narrow lead thanks to a goal by Cameron McCabe in the first half of a non-league game against Belleville Mennonite, but a pair of insurance goals scored by Shane Coffman and Aaron Schepis, respectively, locked in the win. The Cardinals (3-12-1) outshot Belleville 19-3 on the way to its first win in the last eight games.
Everett 6, Southern Fulton 0: Everett's effective offense was too much for Southern Fulton in a Sideling Hill League game, as the Warriors notched all six of their goals in the second half. Brothers Bailey and Brady Foor scored five of six goals for the Warriors. Colby Whiteside and Bailey Burkett combined for 16 saves for Southern Fulton (8-8, 6-5 SHL).
Girls volleyball
McConnellsburg 3, Northern Bedford 2: McConnellsburg escaped a five-set SHL/ICC battle with Northern Bedford, despite a pair of decisive set victories to start the match. After beating the Panthers 25-12, 25-16 in the first two sets, Northern Bedford came back to win the next two sets 25-21, 25-22. But the Spartans (15-1, 10-0 SHL, 7-0 ICC) rallied for a 15-11 win in the final frame to remain undefeated in league play.
"We found ourselves in another battle tonight, but showed fight and determination to find a way to win," McConnellsburg coach Heidi Johnston said.
Carly Swope earned a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs. She also had five aces, while Bridgette Ritchey smacked down 15 kills. Lindsey Randler racked up 49 assists and had 10 digs. Tara Cutshaw was unstoppable behind the service line with nine aces.
Southern Fulton 3, Everett 1: Southern Fulton avoided Everett's attempts at a comeback with a 3-1 SHL/ICC win after a pair of narrow victories in the first two sets to put it away in a 25-17 victory in the fourth frame.
The Indians (6-10, 4-6 SHL, 4-5 ICC) had a nice night defensively, led by Madison Breeze, who had 30 digs, while Morgan Fitz and Destini Swisher each had 25. Breeze and Fitz also had eight and 10 kills, respectively.
Tussey Mountain 3, Fannett-Metal 0: The Tigers fell in a SHL/ICC match to Tuessey Mountain, scoring no more than 17 points in any set. Emily Metcalfe and Lizzy Peppernick each had three kills to lead the offense, while Metcalfe led the defense with 16 digs. Fannett-Metal falls to 1-19 overall and 0-10 SHL, 0-8 ICC.
