F-F H.S. Highlights: Ship, JB settle for tie in girls soccer

One hundred minutes ticked off the clock, and Shippensburg and James Buchanan still couldn’t settle things in a Mid Penn Colonial Division girls soccer game Thursday night. The teams had to settle for a 1-1 tie.

This is the second time this year these teams have gone to double overtime - in the first meeting, the Lady Hounds earned a 2-1 victory.

James Buchanan (5-7-2, 3-5-2 MPC) took a first-half lead when Reilly Heinbaugh was credited for a goal in the 28th minute of action - her first career goal. But less than four minutes later, the Lady Hounds (5-11-2, 3-7-2 MPC) made up for their miscue when Kara Newell notched an unassisted goal.

“It was a good game; everyone played with great energy and intensity throughout the game,” Shippensburg coach Mary Miller said. “James Buchanan played a great game and had a lot of opportunities, but our offense and defense held tight and kept fighting.”

The Rockets put up a barrage of shots, finishing the game with 31 shots. But goalkeeper Hannah Pletcher was like a brick wall, earning 23 saves for the Lady Hounds.

Greencastle 3, Waynesboro 2: Greencastle-Antrim’s girls soccer team earned a much-needed win, narrowly holding off Waynesboro, 3-2, in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game Thursday evening.

The Blue Devils had not won for six games straight.

Freshman Ashley Noblit was the star of the show for the Blue Devils (5-10-2, 4-6-2 MPC), scoring two of the three goals.

Jenay Faulkner started the scoring just eight minutes into the game, and two minutes later, she assisted on Noblit’s first tally.

Waynesboro (8-8, 5-6 MPC) cut the deficit to one goal when Morgan French scored right out of the halftime. But Noblit answered with another goal just four minutes later.

Olivia Churchman scored late in the game, but the Maidens couldn’t quite push it to overtime. Waynesboro had a 20-16 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in corners.

Hannah Beeler and Faulkner split time in net, racking up 14 saves for G-A.

BOYS SOCCER

Chambersburg 2, Red Land 2: After beating Red Land handily earlier this year, the tables turned for Chambersburg’s boys soccer team Thursday afternoon.

The Patriots had Chambersburg on its heels after scoring midway through the first half, and although the Trojans eventually took the lead, the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division opponents had to settle for a 2-2 tie.

Chambersburg (9-4-3, 7-3-2 MPC) dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Red Land, 15-6, and earning nine corner kicks, compared to just two for the Pats. But it was Red Land that took an early lead.

The Trojans did respond, though, earning a pair of goals in a four-minute time span. Rene Quintanilla had the first strike with an assist from Nathan Maynard, and Rafael Bonilla scored the go-ahead goal. But with one minute remaining in regulation, Red Land’s Jacob Speicher found the back of the net to send the game to overtime.

In the teams’ first meeting, Chambersburg won, 6-0.
