F-F H.S. Highlights: Thursday, Sept. 29

An unfortunate string of of injuries and adversities have hit the Chambersburg boys soccer team recently, but the Trojans have managed to get through it with flying colors.

Thursday night at Trojan Stadium, playing rival Carlisle, that bad luck turned around and resulted in a 2-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory over the Thundering Herd.

Chambersburg (7-2-2, 6-2-1 MPC) streched its unbeaten streak to nine games.

“It was our night to be lucky,” Trojan coach Corey Grove said. “Maybe it was time we had a situation where we didn’t play our best and still found a way to get the win.”

Chambersburg’s first goal was an own goal. Left back Josue Chacon sent a ball into the box that deflected off a Herd player and into the goal. After Carlisle tied the score, the Trojans’ Rene Quintanilla hit a shot that went in right between the goalkeeper’s legs.

Grove said, “I told the boys this made up for the unlucky breaks we got recently. We’re kind of beat up - I only used two subs tonight - but they showed resilience.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Chambersburg 3, Red Land 0: The Trojans won their sixth straight match by scores of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-12. Chambersburg is now 8-2 (7-2 MPC).

“It was a good team effort tonight and we had a chance to play everyone and try some new things,” Trojan assistant coach Bobby Culler said. “It was a good way to start the second half of the season.”

The leaders for Chambersburg included Haylee Holsopple (10 kills, 3 blocks), Lauren Ching (28 assists, 3 aces) and Danessa Martin (17 digs, 3 aces). Also, Breanne Byers had two blocks, and Bailee Nitterhouse had seven kills and 11 digs.

Girls soccer

Northern York 4, Greencastle-Antrim 0: Unbeaten Northern York built up a three-goal lead and never looked back in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game against Greencastle. The Blue Devils are now 4-8-1 (3-4-1 MPC).

Girls volleyball

James Buchanan 3, Trinity 2: The Rockets climbed out of a 2-1 deficit to rally for a Mid Penn Colonial win over Trinity. In the final two games, JB (7-4, 2-3 MPC) won 25-19 and 15-13 in a nailbiter to win for the fourth time in five matches.

Tyana Quivers piled up 15 kills, 13 digs and six aces to lead the Rockets, while Jenna Mongold had 15 assists, Sarah Blair had 10 assists and nine digs, Rachel Manikowski had 11 digs and four aces and Emma Wise had seven digs.

Greencastle 3, Hershey 2: The Blue Devils avenged an earlier 3-1 loss to the Trojans by coming back from an 0-2 hole. G-A took the last three games 27-25, 25-19 and 15-8.

Greencastle (5-6, 3-3 MPC Keystone) got 12 kills from Keri Gearhart and 11 from Chloe McKenzie. Gabby Baughman contributed 22 assists, Rachel Verhoef had 3 blocks and Madison Goodwin had 15 digs.

Palmyra 3, Shippensburg 0: The Lady Hounds went down quickly in the first game, 25-5, but made it more difficult for the Cougars in the next two, 25-12 and 25-20. For Ship (1-8, 0-7 MPC Keystone), LeAnne Baker had 12 assists, Memphis Martin and Kailey Elroe each had  four aces, and Maggie Black and Elroe each had five kills.

Everett 3, Fannett-Metal 0: The Warriors won games of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-16 to blank the Tigers (1-11, 0-5 SHL, 0-4 ICC). Lizzy Peppernick and Jaelee Stouffer each had four kills for F-M, Emily Metcalfe had nine digs, Maci Bowen had seven digs and Kierstan Black made three aces and three assists.

Shalom Christian 3, Faith 0: The Flames raised their record to 9-1 (8-1 MDCC) with a whitewash over Faith Christian, 25-15, 25-10 and 25-19.  The top stats producers for Shalom were Kylie Eby (21 assists), Haley Bricker (11 kills, 7 aces) and Lauren Stains (9 digs).

Field hockey

Forbes Road 5, Mercersburg 1: Olivia Hall had a big day for the Cardinals, especially in the second half, when Forbes Road outscored the Blue Storm (1-4), 4-0. Hall and Mercersburg Academy’s Annaliesse Cantera each scored in the first half to make it 1-1.

In the latter half, the Cardinals (7-3) got three straight goals from Hall and she assisted on the final tally, by McKenzie Gelvin, who racked up four assists.

Blue Storm coach Alicia Hawk said, “Our defense of Tess Browne, Elizabeth Heidecker, Rachel Marsh, ALyssa Magazine and goalie Kate Frimet were instrumental in diminishing Gelvin’s scoring opportunities.”
