H.S. Extra Notebook

The 27th annual Lady Spartan Volleyball Tournament was held last week in McConnellsburg, with area teams going head-to-head for the tourney crown.

James Buchanan made it to the tournament final, but lost to Heritage Academy 25-7, 25-18. Heritage went undefeated in the tournament with an 8-0 record in pool play. The Rockets went 6-2, sweeping Shippensburg (25-19, 25-18) and McConnellsburg (25-22, 25-22). James Buchanan also beat Saint James in pool play, 25-22, 25-16.

McConnellsburg went 3-5, splitting against Saint James and earning a pair of wins over Shippensburg (25-21, 25-20). The Lady Hounds were winless in the tournament.

STREAKING: After nine straight victories, the James Buchanan girls tennis team welcomed Trinity - the team responsible for the one black mark on the Rockets’ ledger this season - but only to have that streak snapped in a 3-2 defeat by the Shamrocks on Wednesday.

No. 1 singles player Rachel Martin, whose only loss of the season came in her earlier Trinity match, was defeated for the second time this year by Kathryn Long, 6-0, 7-5.

ON THE MEND: The area’s top distance runner, Abby Yourkavitch, has not spent much time on the cross country course so far this season, forgoing the team’s first two events of the year due to a leg injury sustained in the offseason. While girls cross country coach Chris Monheim says Yourkavitch feels physically OK, it is in her best interest not to press the injury and risk further complications later in the season.

Late last week, Yourkavitch began working out with the team again, and ran in her first official event Wednesday in a meet at CD East. Yourkavitch placed first with a conservative 20:49 finish.

“Even though we held her out for a while, she was willing to do lots of cross training, therapy and appointments with the chiropractor, and it seems like it has made a difference,” Monheim said. “The plan would be to have her go on Saturday (at the Bulldog Invitational). She’s definitely very anxious to get into action as long as she feels OK.”

Monheim said Yourkavitch has her eyes on a district title and a solid run at states, but her postseason all depends on how she treats her injury now.

INJURY REPORT: Chambersburg football’s Austin Kopp has been sidelined for the season with a broken fibula, according to the CASHS football Twitter. Kopp went down in the second half against Shippensburg, and after being evaluated on the sideline by trainers, he was not permitted to reenter the game.

Prior to his injury, he had 45 receiving yards and a touchdown against Shippensburg, and had an interception against Greencastle-Antrim in Week 1.
