H.S. Highlights: JB girls soccer wins big over Bulldogs


The James Buchanan girls soccer team overwhelmed Big Spring to claim a 5-0 Mid Penn Colonial Division win - the Rockets' first MPC victory of the season.

Maddy Peck kicked things off for the Rockets, scoring just three minutes into the first half, and added her second of the afternoon just four minutes later. Kirstin Eichelberger, Saige Eckard and Mickey Heinbaugh all scored in the remaining time, while Peck, Heinbaugh and Sydney Benedick also added assists.

James Buchanan (2-3, 1-2 MPC) outshot the Bulldogs 15-3.

Boys soccer 

Boiling Springs 2, Shippensburg 1: Boiling Springs struck early in a Mid Penn Colonial division matchup against Shippensburg, scoring early in both halves as the Bubblers took down the Greyhounds 2-1.

Boiling Springs' Benny Cole scored just six minutes into the first half, followed by a game-tying goal by Ship's Ian Weikel. But Rynn Fisher of Boiling Springs scored the game-winner early in the second half. The teams were tightly matched on offense, as the Bubblers outshot Shippensburg (1-3, 0-2 MPC) 17-15, and had the edge in corner kicks 5-4.

Greencastle-Antrim 3, Northern York 2: Greencastle fended off a Northern comeback in a Mid Penn Colonial matchup Saturday.

Brandon Stuhler and Josh Kline scored for Greencasdtle (2-0, 2-0 MPC) in the first half. Stuhler's goal was assisted by Ian Gelsinger, while Kline found the back of the net on a penalty kick.

Northern threatened the lead with a goal early in the second half, but Jared Rohrbaugh netted the eventual game-winning goal just a minute later.

Girls soccer

Chambersburg 2, Carlisle 1: Chambersburg's Gabriella Leucona scored a pair of goals to lift the Trojans to a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over Carlisle.

The Thundering Herd tied the game early in the second half, but Leucona found the back of the net with five minutes left in regulation for the win. Chambersburg is now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Commonwealth.

Spring Grove 3, Waynesboro 0: Waynesboro's hot start to the season came to an end Saturday in a 3-0 non-league loss to Spring Grove.

The Rockets scored twice in the first 15 minutes of play all the while limiting Waynesboro's chances. The Maidens (4-1) had just six shots on goal, but had the edge in corner kicks 7-3.

Boiling Springs 8, Shippensburg 1: Boiling Springs' high-powered offense was too much for Shippensburg to handle  in an 8-1 Mid Penn Colonial division loss.

Shippensburg's Sarah Strohm scored the Lady Hounds' lone goal, assisted by Kara Newell late in the first half. Hannah Pletcher had 17 saves for Shippensburg (1-4, 0-2 MPC).

"Tough game with mistakes that ended up putting us into tough situations," Shippensburg coach Mary Miller said. "Have to keep working and pushing forward and pulling things together."

Field hockey

Northern York 2, Shippensburg 1: Despite being outshot 12-3, Shippensburg held a narrow lead midway through a non-league contest against Northern York.

Maddie Kline scored with 10 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Lady Hounds (1-2) a cushion, but the relief did not last long. Emma Simpson scored less than two minutes into the second half, followed by a game-winning goal by McKenna Rosensteel with 12 minutes left.

New Oxford 7, Greencastle-Antrim 3: Greencastle dropped Game 1 of the Blue Devils Tournament 7-3 to New Oxford as the Colonials turned up the offense, scoring six goals in the second half.

Lexie Sibbo and Alexis Dougherty scored in the first, both assisted by Moriah Ricker, to give the Blue Devils (1-2) a one-goal lead at the break, but a pair of New Oxford goals in the first six minutes of the second half gave the Colonials all the momentum. Bryanna Conway scored Greencastle's lone second-half goal.

"We knew coming in that New Oxford was a strong team with a lot of returning talent," Greencastle coach Rebecca Rice said. "We did well in the first half to get a 2-1 lead, but they outplayed us in the second."

Greencastle-Antrim 6, Spring Grove 0: Greencastle bounced back in the Blue Devils Tournament to shut out Spring Grove 6-0 in Game 2, thanks to a big second half. Six different players scored Greencastle's goals, while Alexis Dougherty, Rachel Marconi and Lauren Cole each had a goal and an assist. Moriah Ricker had a goal and two assists for the Blue Devils (2-2).

"We started slow in this match," Greencastle coach Rebecca Rice said. "However, the girls were relentless on offense and racked up a lot of shots and corners. It was positive to again see balanced scoringd."

Girls volleyball

Shenandoah Valley Christian 3, Mercersburg Academy 0: Mercersburg was shut out in a non-league contest to Shenandoah Valley 25-20, 25-16, 25-18.

Hannah Hassoun led the Blue Storm with seven kills, while Morgan Steiner had 14 assists and Patrice McGloin had three aces.

Greencastle-Antrim 3, Northern York 0: Greencastle overwhelmed Northern in the first and third sets of a non-league sweep of the Polar Bears. 25-16, 25-22 and 25-7.

Keri Gearhart had 12 kills, two blocks and six aces for the Blue Devils (1-1), while Gabby Baughman had 18 assists.

Lower Dauphin 3, Greencastle-Antrim 2: Greencastle dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Lower Dauphin later in the day, coming back from an 0-2 deficit to win 25-18, 25-22 in Games 3 and 4, but fell just short, 15-9 in the final set.

Keri Gearhart had 12 kills, 14 digs, three aces and two blocks, while Madee Goodwin led the team with 17 digs and had seven kills for the Blue Devils (1-2).

Cross country

Chambersburg in Penn Track Invitational: The Trojan girls, still missing injured No. 1 runner Abby Yourkavitch, still placed 11th with 259 points.

The top runners were Kaylee Mowery (11th, 20:00.94), Cadie Kiser (22nd, 20:38.42), Anna DeGrange (49th, 22:07.13), and three runners who took 93rd through 95th - Livvy Sommers (23:49.65), Sydney Parson (23:53.89) and Camaryn Ellis (23:57.09).

For the Chambersburg boys, who placed 16th as a team, Andrew Feldman was the top finisher, taking 38th in 17:28.50. He was followed by Trentin Overcash (66th, 18:00.80), Quinn Mangan (96th, 18:28.70), Donovan Hazelton (105th, 18:42.60) and Chris Diaz (113th, 18:48.60).
