F-F H.S. Highlights: Trojans win Colonial match by 11

Chambersburg shot its highest score of the season by 11 strokes but still survived by beating Northern York and Big Spring by 11 strokes each. Chambersburg’s Karsen Rush was the only player to break 81 at Eagles Crossing with a 1-over par 73.

“That course always plays tough,” Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said. “They had rain last night and the greens weren’t very consistent. The kids had a hard time getting the speed right. Karsen had a nice bounce back - last year he shot his highest score here.”

James Buchanan coach Mark Wise said, “It was a tough day to play with the heat, humidity and wind.”

Luke Ocker was the only other Trojan in the top 14, tied for third with an 82. John Williams of Greencastle-Antrim also had 82, and JB’s Jacob Suder and Waynesboro’s Robert Sirk each posted 83.

Wise said, “Jacob played well on his back nine (3-over) and not playing up to his abilities on the front. Zack Devotie (89) played well for us.”

Olivia Gardenhour of Waynesboro was tied for third with an 82 and was the top female.

GIRLS SOCCER

Shippensburg 4, Mifflin County 3: Alexis Reese played the hero Thursday, lifting Shippensburg to a non-league victory with a game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation against Mifflin County. After Ship took a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Huskies scored three unanswered goals.

Ashlee Rowles scored with 13 minutes left to tie the game. Reese's game-winner came with 23 seconds left and was assisted by Rowles and Grace Keirzkowski. Sarah Strohm and Kara Newell had the other goals for the Lady Hounds (1-2).

“It was a great game for us to prove to ourselves that we can fight through anything,” Shippensburg coach Mary Miller said. “We got up early and came out a little soft in the second half, but found our fight and worked together and put some great finishes on the goal.”

Boys soccer

Central Dauphin 1, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans’ second game of the year looked a whole lot like the first - Chambersburg fell 1-0 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division game to Central Dauphin on Thursday. On Tuesday, they lost 1-0 to State College.

In both games, the teams had fairly even stats, but Chambersburg’s opponent scored a second-half goal to win. This time it was CD’s Dax Hoffman who got the game-winner. Jacob Dougal made five saves for the Trojans.

Greencastle-Antrim 5, James Buchanan 0: Damian Sherrill and Brandon Stuhler made a productive 1-2 punch for the Blue Devils in their season opener. Sherrill had three goals and an assist and Stuhler had two goals and an assist. Logan Cline also had an assist.

Sean Martin made eight saves for the Rockets (0-4, 0-2 MPC Colonial).

Waynesboro 2, Big Spring 0: Aaron Tylicki netted a goal and an assist in Waynesboro’s Mid Penn Colonial victory over Big Spring. Derek Buhrman also scored, and Zane Rook had an assist as the Indians (3-1, 2-0 MPC) outshot Big Spring 16-4.

Girls soccer

Central Dauphin 7, Chambersburg 0: The Rams led only 2-0 at halftime, but poured it on in the latter half. Haley Luckenbill led Central Dauphin with two goals and Jenna Shoop had a goal and an assist. Kirstin Carpenter made four saves for the Trojans (1-3, 0-2 MPC).

Waynesboro 11, Big Spring 1: It was all ’Boro all the time - the Maidens (4-0, 2-0 MPC) led 7-0 by halftime. Skylar Lambert led the way with four goals and two assists, and Morgan French contributed four assists as well as a goal. Gillian Burger and Taylor Clawson also put up two goals each.

Field hockey

Greencastle-Antrim 7, CD East 0: The Blue Devils (1-1, 1-1 MPC Colonial) struck for five first-half goals in a rout of Central Dauphin East. Racheal Marconi had two goals, Moriah Ricker had a goal and two assists, Micaela Dougherty posted two assists and Lauren Cole, Bryanna Conway, Alexis Dougherty and Bella Facchina also scored.

“We rebounded nicely after a close, tough loss to West Perry,” G-A coach Rebecca Rice said. “We were able to get offensive production from a variety of girls, which is promising going forward.”

Boiling Springs 2, Shippensburg 0: After a scoreless first half, the Bubblers got goals from Taylor Pentz and Karli Alichwer to top the Lady Hounds (1-1, 1-1 MPC Colonial).

Belleville Mennonite 9, Mercersburg Academy 0: Melissa Yoder had four goals and Olivia Bell added three for Belleville. Blue Storm goalie Kate Frimet made 12 saves.

Girls volleyball

Waynesboro 3, Greencastle-Antrim 2: Fans got their money's worth in a thrilling Mid Penn Keystone Division showdown with Waynesboro against Greencastle in five sets. Waynesboro came out on top winning games one (25-13), four (25-21) and five (15-10).

Greencastle claimed the second and third sets 25-22, 25-21, respectively. Keri Gearhart had 13 kills for Greencastle, while Gabby Baughman had 23 assists. Rachel Verhoef, Madison Goodwin and Gearhart each had four aces.

Northern York 3, James Buchanan 0: The Polar Bears took games of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-13. The Rockets (1-2, 0-1 MPC Capital) got 10 kills from Tyana Quivers, 13 assists and seven digs from Sarah Blair, eight dogs by Alyssa Blair and four aces by Shay Fisher.

McConnellsburg 3, Chestnut Ridge 0: McConnellsburg came out on top of three tight sets against Chestnut Ridge 25-23, 25-21 and 25-20 to complete the Sideling Hill League sweep. Kacey Hann had eight kills, and Carly Swope had 17 digs, four kills and four aces. Lindsey Randler had 19 assists for the Spartans (2-0, 1-0 SHL).

“Ridge is always a strong team so to get them in three tonight is a huge league win,” McConnellsburg coach Heidi Johnston said. “I'm very pleased with how each girl played tonight.”

Shalom Christian 3, Fannett-Metal 0: Haley Bricker led the Flames to a non-league victory over Fannett-Metal, padding the stat sheet with 12 kills, nine aces and two blocks. Shalom (4-0) overwhelmed Fannett-Metal (0-2), keeping the Tigers from scoring more than 13 points in each set. The Flames completed the sweep 26-13, 25-8, 25-10.

Southern Fulton 3, Northern Bedford 1: After dropping the first set to Northern Bedford 25-21, Southern Fulton bounced back to take the match with three straight victories, 25-22, 25-10, 25-22 for its first Sideling Hill League/ Inter-County Conference win.

Morgan Fitz had seven kills and 10 digs, while Destini Swisher had 29 digs. Tiara Bard led the team with five aces and also had nine assists for the Indians (1-1, 1-0 SHL/ICC).

GIRLS TENNIS

James Buchanan 5, Middletown 0: The Rockets (8-1, 4-1 MPC Colonial) made it eight straight wins - the last four by 5-0 scores - by blanking Middletown. James Buchanan allowed only three points in the match, with No. 1 Rachel Martin winning 6-0, 6-0.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

James Buchanan 17, Southern Fulton 45: The James Buchanan boys cross country team placed four runners in the top five of a non-league meet with Southern Fulton, led by Dalton Leab, who crossed the line in 18:54. Alex Griffin (19:07), Ethan Izer (20:16) and Nick Garbinski (20:20) followed to score for the Rockets (2-1).

Southern Fulton’s top finisher was Nate Voight, who placed sixth with a finish of 20:24. Dylan Ensor finished sixth overall at 21:04 for the Indians (0-1).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

James Buchanan 19, Southern Fulton 39: Sarah Kimmell crossed the finish line for James Buchanan in 26:15, kicking off a non-league victory over Southern Fulton. Claire Kriner (27:12), and Emily Newton (27:47) followed for the Rockets (1-2), while Maddie Baker finished fourth overall in 28:25 for the Indians (0-1), followed by teammate Emily Bradshaw in 28:38.
