H.S. Highlights: Trojan field hockey team gains big win

A road game at State College was a difficult way for the Chambersburg field hockey team to open its season Tuesday afternoon.

But the Trojans pulled off an upset, defeating the Little Lions 2-1 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division contest, their first over them since 2013.

"It was a great win," Chambersburg coach Jen Amsley said. "I told the girls this was the first time they've actually played together for the whole entire game - for all 60 minutes. We had no real letdown, because their goal came on a really good shot."

Liza Ernst opened the scoring for the Trojans 20 minutes into the game in assists from Rachel Dusman and Kaylea Garman. Kelsey Love tied it for State College with 30 seconds left before halftime, but Dusman scored the game-winner with 6:41 left.

Chambersburg led in shots (12-7) and goalie Ari Burke made six saves.

Amsley said, "Our 1-2 punch of Liza and Rachel led us, but the whole team played well. The defense held and our keeper had a good game. We might have turned some heads with this win; we are motivated by where we were picked in the preseason."

State College 1, Chambersburg 0: A second-half goal by Ben Oesterling was the difference in a victory for the Little Lions in the Trojans' season opener.

"To be honest, I thought we played well," Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. "We brought the energy to them in the first half and outworked them, and had some decent opportunities. Even in the second half, I think we outplayed them.

"JD (Jacob Dougal) made a nice save on a breakaway, then we had a great chance in the last two minutes but hit it right at their keeper. We can take a lot of positives out of this game."

Boys soccer

Waynesboro 2, James Buchanan 1, OT: Derek Buhrman was the star of the show for Waynesboro (2-1, 1-0 MPC) in a Mid Penn Colonial Division win over James Buchanan (0-3, 0-1 MPC). Buhrman scored both of the Indians' goals, including the overtime winner.

Northern York 2, Shippensburg 1: Shippensburg had a slight edge in shots (18-16) and corner kicks (6-2), but Northern York won on the scoreboard in Mid Penn Colonial Division action. Eli Hubbard scored the lone goal of the game for Ship (1-2, 0-1 MPC) with an assist from Jackson VanHorne.

McConnellsburg 2, Chestnut Ridge 1, 2OT: Josh Booth played hero in McConnellsburg’s season opener, scoring a golden goal midway through the second overtime period of a Sideling Hill League game. The Spartans (1-0, 1-0 SHL) took a lead late in the game with a Nic Culler goal, but Ridge answered with six minutes left to send it to overtime. Landon Seiders assisted on the game winner.

Broadfording 6, Cumb. Valley Christian 1: Sterling Bard tied the game 1-1 in the 18th minute for the Blazers (1-3, 1-3 MDCC), but Broadfording pulled away with two more goals by halftime.

Shalom Christian 1, Faith 0: Peter Livermore scored in the final minute of the first half, and Shalom hung on for a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference victory over Faith. Chase Martin was credited with the assist. The Flames (4-0, 4-0 MDCC) have allowed just two goals all season.

“We had a very tough opponent in Faith, but we worked to control the ball and looked for our chances,” Shalom coach Chris Lehman said. “It was a rough, grind-it-out kind of game, and I’m proud of our team for preserving another shutout.”

Girls soccer

State College 2, Chambersburg 0: The Little Lions scored a goal in each half to down the Trojans (1-2, 0-1 MPC).

"We did some good things and we had some good opportunities," Chambersburg coach Ed Franchi said. "We fought hard the whole game."

Waynesboro 2, James Buchanan 0: Gillian Burger and Taylor Clawson each scored once in Waynesboro’s Mid Penn Colonial Division win against James Buchanan.

Girls volleyball

Chambersburg 3, Red Land 0: In the final set, Red Land gave Chambersburg everything it had, but it wasn’t enough; the Trojans walked away with a 33-31 win to complete a straight-set, non-league victory. Haylee Holsopple led Chambersburg’s offense with 14 kills, while Lauren Ching, Bailee Nitterhouse and Ashley Adams split 15 evenly. Danessa Martin, Jenna Lombardozzi and Ching all had 12 kills, while Kyliene Wadel finished with 10.

“It was a good team win tonight,” Chambersburg assistant coach Bobby Culler said. “I think we had all those first-match jitters. Haylee played a nice match, as did Bailee, and Lauren did a good job distributing the ball to our hitters. We served tough and played pretty decent defense.”

Hershey 3, Greencastle 1: Keri Gearhart racked up 11 kills and nine digs, but it wasn’t enough for Greencastle to overcome Hershey in a Mid Penn Keystone match. Gabby Baughman also contributed 15 assists and five digs.

Waynesboro 3, Mechanicsburg 2: Waynesboro pulled out a hard-fought victory, claiming its first Mid Penn Keystone victory with a 18-16 win in the fifth set against Mechanicsburg.

McConnellsburg 3, St. Maria Goretti 0: McConnellsburg got off to a fine start, holding St. Maria Goretti to 19 points or fewer in all three sets of a non-league match. Carly Swope led the Spartans in kills (9), digs (8), blocks (3) and aces (5). Bridgette Ritchey finished with five kills, five digs and four aces.

Mt. Union 3, Southern Fulton 0: Every set was a tight one, but Mount Union won a non-league match against Southern Fulton. Morgan Fitz had seven kills and eight digs for the Indians (0-1), while Sierra Lashley finished with five aces and a pair of blocks.

Shalom Christian 3, Faith 0: Shalom Christian kept on rolling through the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference, picking up another straight-set victory. Haley Bricker led the Flames (3-0, 3-0 MDCC) in both kills and digs, which eight each, while Lauren Stains had six kills to go along with six digs and a block.

“Tonight was another exciting game,” Shalom coach Katie Gantz said. “Faith definitely challenged us with some tough serves and some truly amazing scrappiness. I was very impressed with our serve receive and our swings tonight.”

Broadfording 3, Cumb. Valley Christian 2: It came down to the wire, but Broadfording had a bit more fight in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference defeat of Cumberland Valley Christian. The Lions won the final set, 15-6. Brianna Miley was a standout for the Blazers (1-3, 1-3 MDCC), finishing with 13 kills and eight digs; Mackenzie Householder had 22 assists.

Field hockey

Shippensburg 7, Waynesboro 1: Courtney Coy banged in a hat trick to lead the Lady Hounds to a season-opening win. Rachel Kline had a goal and an assist for Ship, which outscored the Maidens (0-3, 0-1 MPC) 5-0 in the second half. Maddie Kline, Zoe Holtry and Lexi Alleman also scored for the Lady Hounds, while Katie Wise hit the back of the cage for 'Boro.

West Perry 4, Greencastle-Antrim 3: Greencastle tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2, but the Mustangs pulled away for good. Moriah Ricker had a goal and assist, Racheal Marconi had two assists and Alexis Dougherty and Lauren Cole each scored for the Blue Devils.

"We knew West Perry would be a tough game to start the year," G-A coach Rebecca Rice said. "We settled in, but will have to be more sharp on defense."

East Juniata 5, Forbes Road 2: The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by McKenzie Gelvin and Maiah Mellott just 8:27 into the game, but East Juniata got it to 2-1 by halftime, then outscored Forbes Road 4-0 in the second half. Zoe Cutchall had 12 saves for FR and Mara Broadwater had an assist.

Girls cross country

Shippensburg 17, James Buchanan 38; Shippensburg 27, Waynesboro 28; Waynesboro 17, JB 45: Shippensburg used a pack of three runners finishing 2-3-4 to edge Waynesboro and beat James Buchanan. The Maidens’ Virginia Cooley had the best time (22:31), but she was chased across the line by the Lady Hounds’ Ava Franklin (22:32), Teddy Powell (22:36) and Megan Pomeroy (22:37).

Boys cross country

James Buchanan 24, Shippensburg 32; Waynesboro 17, Shippensburg 38; Waynesboro 22, JB 33: Waynesboro’s Chris Maichle finished just six seconds ahead of JB’s Dalton Leab (18:02 to 18:06) and the Indians put five in the first eight finishers to defeat the Rockets. Shippensburg’s top finisher was Hunter Kent in sixth place.

Girls tennis

James Buchanan 5, Camp Hill 0: The Rockets raised their record to 7-1 (3-1 MPC) with their seventh straight victory, and third in a row by 5-0 score. The JB doubles teams of Abby Mackling and Megan Hoffeditz, and Leah WIngert and Amber Clark each won their match, 6-1, 6-2.

Mifflin County 4, Chambersburg 1: The Trojans fell to 0-5, but did manage to pick up their first point of the season. At No. 3 singles, Hope Sprecher earned a close 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Huskies' Liz Rogers. The No. 2 doubles team of Aubrey Carlin and Caroline Hance dropped a hearetbreaker, 5-7, 6-2 and 10-8 to Mifflin County.
